IPL Star Vaibhav Suryavanshi Can't Play For India Yet Because Of This ICC Rule

In a stunning debut that left cricket fans and legends in awe, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Samastipur, Bihar, is lighting up the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a level of poise and power well beyond his years. Representing Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025, the young left-handed batsman has emerged as the breakout star of the season, already being hailed as a future star of cricket.
In just his third match of the season, Vaibhav etched his name in IPL history by smashing a century in just 35 balls, a feat that has made headlines around the globe. At an age when most teenagers are navigating school life, Vaibhav is facing world-class bowlers under high-pressure stadium lights – and excelling.
Veteran cricketers and fans alike have begun calling for his inclusion in the national team, with many convinced that he is destined for greatness. However, one hurdle stands in his way: an International Cricket Council (ICC) regulation introduced in 2020 mandates that a player must be at least 15 years old to make their international debut.
Vaibhav, who turns 15 on March 27, 2026, does not yet meet this minimum age requirement. But all hope is not lost. The ICC’s policy includes a special clause allowing exceptions. If a player demonstrates sufficient experience, mental maturity, and physical readiness, the ICC may permit an international debut under the age limit. This provision leaves the door open for Vaibhav’s early entry into the international arena – if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) makes a case and the ICC agrees.
Interestingly, the youngest international debut on record still belongs to Pakistan’s Hasan Raza, who played his first Test match at the age of 14 years and 227 days. In India, the record is held by none other than Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16 years and 205 days.
With the national team scheduled to tour England in June, departing on June 21, and a 17-year-old also being considered for inclusion, speculation is mounting that Vaibhav might be fast-tracked into the squad, should the ICC grant an exemption.
