Jaishankar Calls Out US' Double Standards On Russian Oil: 'Arguments Not Applied To China'
@Source: timesnownews.com
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Saturday called out the United States for selectively targeting over Russian oil imports. The relations between New Delhi and Washington are on a downturn after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent, including 25 per cent additional duties for India's purchase of Russian crude oil. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2025, Jaishankar called out the US for imposing duties on India while sparing China, the largest importer. "It is presented as an oil issue, but it’s still not applied to the largest importer, China. Arguments used to target India have not been applied to China," Jaishankar said. Responding to repeated allegations by the Trump administration that India has been "profiteering" by buying discounted Russian oil and then selling refined petroleum products, Jaishankar said, "It's funny to have people who work for a pro-business American administration accusing other people of doing business." "That's really curious. If you have a problem buying oil or refined products from India, don't buy it. Nobody forces you to buy it. But Europe buys, America buys, so you don't like it, don't buy it," the External Affairs Minister said. Jaishankar asserted that New Delhi will make decisions according to "national interest. "At the end of it all, we make decisions that are in the national interest." EAM Jaishankar said that United States President Donald Trump's way of dealing with the world is a very major departure from traditional ways. On Trump's foreign policy approach, Jaishankar said, "We've not had a US president who has conducted foreign policy as publicly as the current one. That itself is a departure that's not limited to India." Why Trump Imposed Tariffs on India, But Spared China? According to reports, China is the largest importer of Russian crude oil. While Trump decided to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for importing Russian oil, he has not taken any such action against China. When asked about the same, different members of Trump's team had different explanations. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, earlier this week, claimed that China had just "diversified" its oil sources. "China's importing (Russian oil) is suboptimal. If you go back and look pre-2022, pre-invasion (of Ukraine by Russia), 13 per cent of China's oil was already coming from Russia; now it's 16 per cent, so China has diversified inputs of their oil," Bessent told CNBC. Contrarily, Bessent's remarks come just days after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said that the US decided not to impose tariffs on China over Russian oil trade as it could drive up global energy prices. "Let's say you were to go after the oil sales of Russian oil to China - well, China just refines that oil. That oil is then sold into the global marketplace, and anyone who's buying that oil would be paying more for it or, if it doesn't exist, would have to find an alternative source for it," Rubio told Fox Business. "We have heard, when you talk about the Senate bill that was being proposed - where there was a hundred per cent tariff on China and India - we did hear from a number of European countries - not in press releases, but we heard from them - some concern about what that could mean," he stated. US Once Backed India's Russian Oil Imports As Trump announced additional duties on India, he was reminded that the US had itself encouraged such imports in the past. A video of former US envoy to India, Eric Garcetti, praising India for buying Russian crude oil also went viral. “They bought Russian oil because we wanted somebody to buy Russian oil at a price cap. That was not a violation or anything. It was actually the design of the policy because, as a commodity, we didn’t want the oil prices going up, and they fulfilled that,” Garcetti said at the 2024 Conference on Diversity in International Affairs. The Ministry of External Affairs, earlier this month, said in a statement, "The US at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability."
