With the Rocket Classic next on the Tour list, the players are making their announcements and arriving at the Detroit Golf Club. In that list is Keegan Bradley, fresh out of his Travelers Championship victory. Luke Clanton is making another rookie appearance since going pro in time for the RBC Canadian. There is another player who is an interesting sight at the PGA Tour event. This player is the former LIV golfer James Piot, who was raised in the Detroit area.
James Piot History
James Piot was still in the amateur circuits when LIV Golf was still setting itself up. He managed to win the 2021 US Amateur at Oakmont before competing in PGA Tour events in 2022. When he first went pro, Piot competed in four PGA Tour events and two majors. The Masters and the US Open. He then decided to hitch his horse to LIV Golf that year during the league’s inaugural season.
Piot On LIV Golf
Joining LIV Golf in its first year came with the caveat of the PGA Tour suspension. Preventing Piot from competing in any officially sanctioned PGA event. That wasn’t too much of an issue for Piot, though; he was still on LIV, so he could still play during his first pro season. He was on the HyFlyers team under Phil Mickelson. Eventually, the contract he had with LIV lapsed and was not renewed.
When Piot left LIV, he couldn’t go through the PGA for a year, so instead he would go through other leagues and challenges. He placed first on a mini golf tour in Florida and would eventually go through an event on the Korn Ferry Tour, but also did the Asian Tour to earn points to get back in the game. Piot doesn’t regret his time on LIV and sees it as a learning opportunity and as a way to get his grand start in the world of professional golf. He saw Mickelson as a legend and a great mentor, and looks forward to seeing what he can achieve
Rocket Classic Reaches Out To Piot
Going into the Rocket Classic, Piot didn’t know what would happen. He was trying to qualify for the main event when he received the call. He received a sponsor exemption guaranteeing him a spot in the event, bringing him back onto the PGA Tour for the first time in three years.
“For it to actually happen is the coolest thing in the world,” Piot told the Detroit News on Monday. “It’s awesome. Just the fact I finally get to play in the Rocket Classic it’s a dream come true. Ever since the event was created on the schedule, I wanted to be a part of it.”
This makes Piot only the second former LIV golfer to make the switch back to the PGA. The first being Laurie Canter back in March. Piot’s return to the PGA marks the start of the next chapter in his life. Maybe he will have the chance to earn a tour card soon, but for now, fans can look forward to seeing a new face on the field during the Rocket Classic.
