PGA Tour Rumors: Creators Entering LIV GOLF 'Duels' Push Back amid Threats
@Source: newsweek.com
LIV Golf will debut its own content creator event this Saturday called "The Duels." It appears that the PGA Tour is not happy with the fact that some of the creators who will be playing have also played in the Creators Classic.According to the X account Flushing It (@flushingitgolf), which covers professional golf worldwide, the PGA Tour contacted these creators and threatened them with sanctions for participating in the LIV Golf event. The report also states that the creators fought back and the threat did not succeed.It is worth noting that Flushing It provided no source for this report.The PGA Tour established a rule in 2022 to ban any player who participates in "unauthorized events," i.e., LIV Golf events. The rule establishes a one-year period before the player can return to an American-based circuit tournament.Previously, the rule had been only enforced to official tournaments. There have been cases of players who have played in unofficial, Saudi-backed league events, such as the Promotions Event, and then been allowed to play in PGA Tour tournaments.A case is that of Fred Biondi, who just a few months ago played the 2024 LIV Promotions Event and was then allowed to play on both the PGA Tour (2025 Mexico Open at VidantaWorld) and the Korn Ferry Tour (The Panama Championship).However, the PGA Tour has indeed applied the rule to players who are not among its members. For example, Eugenio Chacarra, who just won his first tournament on the DP World Tour (Hero Indian Open), will not be able to tee off on the PGA Tour until September, a year after his last tournament on the LIV Golf. The Spaniard has never been in possession of a PGA Tour card.One interesting case is that of Laurie Canter, who played in the Genesis Scottish Open 2024 under the PGA Tour umbrella just six months after his last LIV Golf event. This exception was due to the fact that the event is co-sanctioned by the American and European tours, with Canter being a member of the latter.Canter himself recently became the first former LIV player to play in an event exclusively sanctioned by the PGA Tour, when he teed off in The PLAYERS Championship 2025.The inaugural edition of The Duels will take place on April 5, in the middle of the event that the league will be playing in Miami. Six teams will face off against each other, with each team featuring a LIV star and a content creator.The teams are Wesley Bryan and Sergio Garcia, Grant Horvat and Phil Mickelson, George Bryan and Dustin Johnson, Fat Perez and Cameron Smith, Rick Shiels and Joaquin Nieman, and Luke Kwon and Bubba Watson. They will play for a quarter of a million dollars in prize money.The case of Wesley Bryan stands out. Bryan is currently an active member of the PGA Tour (not a full member, but still a member) and has already played in three tournaments of the circuit's current season.Also the cases of Luke Kwon and Grant Horvat, winners of the first and second editions of the Creators Classic, respectively.More Golf: Rory McIlroy Reveals What Needs to be 'Figured Out' Ahead of the Masters
