World number one seed, the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, won the Wimbledon Open in four sets to put his Paris defeat against his Spanish rival, Carlos Alcaraz, 35 days ago, behind him.
For Sinner, this is his first Wimbledon title. In his revenge win against Alcaraz, he stopped the Spanish champion from winning his third straight title in London.
They played in front of a crowd which included the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, George and Charlotte, Sky News reported. Many tennis fans feel the pair are developing an exciting rivalry that could endure for many years to come.
Sinner avenges defeat
Sinner’s Wimbledon victory follows only 35 days after he lost to Alcaraz in what many judge to be the greatest ever French Roland Garros Open final, which lasted five hours and 29 minutes.
At one stage, Sinner was forced to delay his serve at a crucial moment in the match when a champagne cork nearly hit him, prompting boos from the crowd and a rebuke from British umpire Alison Hughes.
“I had a very tough loss in Paris,” said Sinner when presented with the prestigious Wimbledon trophy. “But it doesn’t really matter how you win or lose the important tournaments, you just have to understand what you did wrong, try to work on that.”
He also said, “This is for sure one of the reasons why I’m holding this trophy. I’m very happy that I held my nerves. It’s an amazing feeling.”
‘It’s difficult to lose’
Following his Wimbledon defeat and the opportunity for a third consecutive victory in London, Alcaraz said: “It’s difficult to lose. First of all, I have to congratulate Jannik once again. It’s a really well-deserved trophy. Unbelievable, two weeks here in London playing great tennis.”
The young but brilliant tennis player from Murcia, Spain, also said, “I am really proud of everything I’m doing. At the beginning of the season, I struggled a little bit, on the court, off the court, but then suddenly I started to bring joy on the court again. I just want to keep going, to keep bringing joy on the court.”
Rivals forever?
Sinner is the first Italian player to win a Wimbledon singles title, and he now stands as a four-time Grand Slam champion, the Guardian reported.
He breaks his -overall tie with an assortment of famous names, including Arthur Ashe, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka. Perhaps most importantly, he ends Alcaraz’s run of five consecutive wins against him, adding a new dimension to a rivalry that seems set to decide the majority of major tournaments shortly.
