With the start of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League slowly approaching, the race to reach full fitness is on for several Indian international stars from across franchises.
The new season is set to begin on March 22 (Saturday), the wait continues for the trio of Mayank Yadav, Sanju Samson and Jasprit Bumrah and their return to their respective franchises. A report by the Press Trust of India (PTI) provided updates on the three Indian stars who are currently dealing with injuries after their respective international assignments.
Mayank Yadav
The express pacer from New Delhi made a massive impact on his start in his IPL career and his sheer pace was good enough that he made the jump to international cricket after playing just four games with the Lucknow Super Giants. Despite being ruled out of the remainder of last year’s season, the Indian team management thought of giving him a go during the home T20I series against Bangladesh where he played three games picking up four wickets at an economy of 6.91.
Since his debut series, he once again picked up a stress-related injury which has ruled him out of action. This comes as a big blow for LSG considering they had retained him for a whopping Rs 11 crore. But the franchise, with Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach, mentioned that they were working with the BCCI to get his recovery right and likely won’t risk him unless he has made a full recovery.
As per the report, Yadav has been recovering with the National Cricket Academy alongside his fellow franchise teammates, Avesh Khan and Mohsin Khan.
Sanju Samson
The star wicketkeeper-batter has finally cemented his position at the top of the order and looks to be India’s T20I setup. After delivering impressive performances against Bangladesh followed by the away series against South Africa, he had a slight dip in form during the home series against England.
During the final T20I against England, a short ball from his Rajasthan Royals teammate, Jofra Acher got he on his glove, which eventually needed surgery. With India shifting their focus on the Champions Trophy, Samson has been working on his recovery for the coming IPL season.
The report suggests that the NCA are happy with his batting but are keeping a close eye whilst keeping behind the wickets and has yet give him the clearance to don the gloves once again. The good news for the Royals is that they have Dhruv Jurel as well who can be the wicketkeeper.
Jasprit Bumrah
The all-format star picked up an back injury during the final Test against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar series tour and did not come out to bowl in the final innings. This also resulted in the pacer missing out on India’s Champions Trophy campaign as well.
The report hints that his return could be delayed in the upcoming IPL season considering that the BCCI do not want to take any risks considering his importance in the side and keeping the England tour that follows into account.
“His recuperation is going well. But at this stage it is better to give him some more time to return to peak fitness, considering India’s Test series against England in June,” a source close to the development was quoted as saying.
After being advised to off-load till the end of January, Bumrah has been slowly increasing his workload and the BCCI are taking a cautious approach in his recovery with the nature of the injury being similar to what he picked up in 2023, where he missed of a significant portion of that year’s international games.
