Jets writer addresses Shedeur Sanders possibility amid rumors of NFL Draft slide

Recently signed New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields suggested via an interesting comment he offered on Wednesday that he understands the club could select a signal-caller with the seventh overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Lucas Hutcherson of SNY, the cable television home of the Jets, subsequently explained why fans shouldn't completely slam the door shut on the idea of the franchise grabbing Colorado's Shedeur Sanders if he falls to selection No. 7 on April 24.
"His confident demeanor could make him well-suited to the additional challenge of playing for a team in a major market like New York," Hutcherson wrote about Sanders. "The Jets are determined not to make the same mistake they've made with other quarterbacks they've drafted in recent years, so they would probably prefer to leave Sanders on the bench for a year or two to learn the ropes if they draft him. That, along with Tyrod Taylor being available as a backup, fits with Fields being brought in to start and means that Sanders wouldn’t need to be thrown into the fire before he’s ready, which would risk seeing his confidence shaken -- which happened to Zach Wilson."
Back in January 2024, former Jets head coach Robert Saleh acknowledged that playing Wilson as a rookie months after the club made him the second overall choice of the 2021 draft did him more harm than good. The Jets then wanted to give Wilson somewhat of a reset for an entire season when they acquired Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in the spring of 2023, but Rodgers suffering a torn Achilles four offensive snaps into his Jets tenure proved to be the beginning of the end of Wilson's time with the organization.
As for Fields' future, the Jets can escape the two-year, $40M deal with $30M guaranteed they gave him back in March as soon as next offseason. Some within the franchise reportedly walked away from the NFL Scouting Combine "enamored with" Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart, but Sanders is still considered the second-best quarterback of this draft class behind Miami's Cam Ward.
Sanders may or may not want to be drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders (pick No. 6), New Orleans Saints (No. 9) or Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 21). Nevertheless, the Jets could have something to say about where Sanders lands.
"Sanders could prove to be the obvious pick for the Jets to make for their long-term future," Hutcherson added.
Then again, it's also possible that Jets employees want a team such as the Saints or Steelers to trade assets away to move up in the draft order and prevent Gang Green from taking Sanders.
