Jimmy Thelin wants to write his own Aberdeen history as Scottish Cup offers reprieve from dreadful league form

Jimmy Thelin helped make history in Sweden and now he wants to make more here in the Scottish Cup. The Dons boss will be looking to make full use of home advantage to take his side past Dunfermline today and into the last-eight of the competition. Thelin would love to become the first Aberdeen manager since Derek McInnes back in 2014 to lift a trophy. But you have to go back to 1990 for the club’s last Scottish Cup win under Alex Smith. Thelin knows memories like those can last a lifetime. He points to his own time at Jonkoping Sodra, where they worked themselves up through the leagues before he had the honour of managing them back in the Allsvenskan for the first time in more than 40 years. Thelin said: “Jonkoping hadn’t been in the top league in Sweden since 1963. They were in division four then worked their way up and I had the good luck to be a coach there when they went to the top league. “It was an amazing feeling to see everyone in your own town who had followed them since the 60s when we did that. It was a fantastic time for me as a coach to be part of that as the people were so happy.” Thelin has only been in the Granite City since the summer but knows there is a real desire to get Aberdeen back on the glory trail. He stated: “Everybody wants us to win so much and that’s why we must give everything in every game. “People trust us to challenge for cup wins and get to Europe. I’ve seen the footage, a lot of the scenes on Union Street the last time Aberdeen won a cup. That hasn’t happened now for 11 years as we have to try to end that.” The current Dons team are struggling in the league but want to buck that trend in the cup after beating Elgin City in the last round. Thelin said: “When I first came to Aberdeen for an interview I could feel the passion in the city. “The history is there and that can be heavy for some but inspirational for others. You can’t carry everything that went before – you have to create a new future to write our own history. It’s a big club, there’s a lot of passion with a good support who have high ambitions. “We have to try to bring success and there’s no doubt the players are up for the challenge. That’s what everybody wants. League games or cup games, you have to put maximum effort into both and be the best you can.”
