KALAMAZOO, MI –– Jordyn Bonnema is joining the champs of Division-II.
The three-sport all-state Kalamazoo Christian legend announced her commitment to Grand Valley State University on Monday afternoon, joining the Lakers’ women’s basketball team after the program won its first national championship since 2006 last month.
Bonnema, the 2024 MLive Kalamazoo-area Dream Team Player of the Year, held offers from Western Michigan, Akron and Ferris State, but decided to pledge with GVSU –– a program that has become a Division-II dynamo under head coach Mike Williams.
In his 10 seasons at the helm, Williams has amassed a 278-49 record, including this year’s program record 38-2 mark. GVSU beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 70-58, in last month’s national title game, securing the Lakers athletic department’s 30th national championship.
Bonnema will join a GVSU squad that features two other former Kalamazoo-area prep stars –– Hadley Miller (Three Rivers) and Tayla Dillard (Kalamazoo Central).
The 5-foot-8 prolific scoring guard capped her impeccably decorated K-Christian career as the program’s all-time leading scorer for both boys and girls basketball, scoring north of 1,600 points and securing three district titles and 80 wins as a four-year starter.
Bonnema averaged 18.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game this season, while shooting 40 percent from 3-point land and 84 percent on free throws in helping the Comets reach a third straight Division 3 regional final.
The senior put together her best season in 2024 in a Comets uniform, posting career-bests in points (20.9), rebounds (6.6), assists (3.3) and steals (3.3), while shooting 80 percent from the free throw line.
With state championships as both a varsity golf and soccer player, Bonnema will go down as one of the most iconic athletes in Kalamazoo Christian history –– and that’s backed by her all-state recognition in all three sports.
