Kansas City Chiefs Dominated By Philadelphia Eagles In 40-22 Rout

The Kansas City Chiefs came to New Orleans with the hopes of achieving something that has never been done before in the sport, the historic three-peat. However, from the opening kickoff against the Philadelphia Eagles, it was clear they had something else in mind. In a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, the Eagles delivered a performance that will never be forgotten against the former two-time defending world champions. The Chiefs were overwhelmed in every facet of the game and had little to no answers.
Kansas City’s offense simply could not find its rhythm for much of the game, and the defense did as much as they could but as the game progressed struggled more and more to contain Jalen Hurts and the Eagles playmakers. By halftime, the was basically already over and felt eerily similar to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay in the 2020-21 season. Despite a late surge, Patrick Mahomes and company were overmatched and fell 40-22 in humiliating fashion.
Eagles Strike Early, Chiefs Struggle To Respond
The Eagles set the tone from the second they stepped onto the field with a dominant performance in the trenches. After a promising opening drive stalled due to a penalty, Philadelphia’s offense quickly rebounded. A coverage lapse by Chiefs Cornerback Jaylen Watson allowed Jahan Dotson to break free for a 28-yard gain, setting up a classic “tush push” touchdown by Hurts.
Kansas City’s offense sputtered out of the gate. Mahomes and the Chiefs managed just one first down in the first half, while the offensive line struggled against the Eagles’ relentless pass rush. Three early sacks forced Mahomes into hurried throws, leading to a disastrous second quarter.
The turning point came when rookie Cornerback Cooper DeJean jumped a route for a pick-six, extending the Eagles’ lead to 17-0. The Chiefs’ nightmare continued when Mahomes threw another interception late in the half, setting up a quick touchdown for A.J. Brown. At halftime, the Chiefs trailed 24-0, with their offense posting just 14 total yards.
Chiefs Show Signs Of Life, But Eagles Extend Their Lead
Kansas City opened the second half with a glimmer of hope, but it was short-lived. Their first drive stalled after Mahomes was sacked twice more, forcing another punt. Hurts and the Eagles responded methodically. Piecing together a 12-play, 69-yard drive that ended in a field goal to extend the lead to 27-0.
Desperation set in for the Chiefs, leading to a failed fourth-down attempt at midfield. The Eagles immediately capitalized as Hurts connected with DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown, putting the game completely out of reach at 34-0.
The Chiefs finally broke through late in the third quarter, thanks to rookie Xavier Worthy. A 50-yard reception jumpstarted a 90-yard drive, which he capped off with a 24-yard touchdown catch. Though the two-point attempt failed, Kansas City was finally on the board as the third quarter ended with the Eagles ahead 34-6.
Too Little, Too Late for Kansas City
The Eagles continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, adding a 48-yard field goal to stretch their lead to 37-6. Moments later, disaster struck again for the Chiefs. Mahomes was sacked and stripped of the ball, leading to another short-field opportunity for Philadelphia. A 50-yard field goal made it 40-6 with just eight minutes remaining.
Kansas City’s offense finally found some rhythm in garbage time. DeAndre Hopkins hauled in a seven-yard touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion to Justin Watson. With under three minutes left, Mahomes launched a 50-yard touchdown pass to Worthy, adding a final bit of excitement before the clock ran out.
The late scoring burst made the final score look more respectable, but the outcome was never in doubt. The Eagles dominated every phase of the game, leaving the Chiefs to enter into the offseason searching for answers.
Final Thoughts: A Harsh Reality Check
Despite their late efforts, the Chiefs were thoroughly outplayed. There’s no other way around it. Mahomes finished the game with 257 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, but he spent much of the game under siege. He was sacked six times, and the Chiefs’ running game was non-existent. Mahomes led the team with just 25 rushing yards.
On the other side, Hurts was efficient, poised, and the better quarterback on the field by far. Hurts finished the game throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns while adding 72 rushing yards. Saquon Barkley was held to just 57 yards, but the Eagles’ balanced attack kept Kansas City on its heels all night. Their defense was equally dominant, forcing three turnovers and allowing just one first down in the first half.
The Chiefs now enter the offseason facing major questions, similar to when they faced a crushing defeat against the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers. From potential coaching adjustments to roster upgrades, changes are absolutely necessary if they hope to return to the mountaintop. For now, the Eagles stand tall as Super Bowl champions, while Kansas City is left to reflect on what went wrong.
