Authorities sentenced Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice to 30 days in jail and five years deferred probation following a car crash.
The 25 year old pleaded guilty to the third degree felonies of a collision involving significant bodily injury and racing on the highway leading to bodily injury, according to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.
“When someone with Mr. Rice’s public platform chooses to drive so recklessly, there is a responsibility to acknowledge the danger posed to others and take accountability,” Dallas DA John Creuzot said.
Rice’s defense counsel, Royce West, released a statement on the athlete’s behalf acknowledging the damage he caused, according to the DA’s office. “Last but not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families,” the statement said.

Rice was involved in a multiple-car accident March 30 on Dallas’ North Central Expressway during rush hour while driving a 2020 Lamborghini, according to the DA’s office. Rice was clocked at 119mph just four-and-half seconds before he struck the first vehicle. Several other vehicles were also caught up in the crash. Rice exited his vehicle and fled the scene on foot without checking on the other drivers, authorities said. Rice, selected 55th overall in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, has been a vital part of their offense since the start of his young career. He had an explosive rookie year where he recorded 79 receptions, 938 yards and seven touchdowns. A major knee injury only allowed Rice to play in four games last season, yet he was set for a highly anticipated comeback in 2025.
Rice will now spend the rest of July into mid August in jail. Rice will likely receive a suspension for multiple games from the NFL, perhaps putting his football career in jeopardy. This would also leave the Chiefs without one of their top offensive threats to start the season.
He isn’t the only NFL player facing legal issues. Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison pleaded no contest to a lesser charge today in his DUI case. Police arrested Cleveland Browns’ rookie running back Quinshon Judkins over the weekend in a domestic violence case.
