THEY may be cruising at the bottom of the ladder but Keleiruna Maidens are on a mission. Being one of Port Moresby Soccer Association’s women’s premier division season campaigners, season in, season out, the club recently fielded young girls who recently took part in the Bernice FC junior girls tournaments last month. One of the brains behind the success of recruiting young talents into the club and ensuring they are well equipped with footy skills is Jonathan Toparea. Last Sunday in the bottom of the ladder clash saw Madens FC defeating Erima Flyover, 1-nil. “We always struggle to find girls to take part in our team in PMSA but we fielded like only four senior experience players and the rest are newbies who came from the Bernice FC tournament.” “From a 14-year-old to 19-year-old and we also have other girls that we’ve developed who went onto play for Murat, University.” “We have our skipper who has experience controlling the backline, our midfield has another experience player including our striker,” said Toparea. “Training is a bit hard because we are still looking around for a venue (training).” In preparation for the PNGFA Women’s National Soccer League and the recruitment of youngsters into Bernice FC team, Toparea said the excitement is there. “For the national youth tournament coming up, we have girls now given last year it was a struggle looking for players.” “Having them playing together looks good and the only issue now is a training venue given girls live in suburbs like Gerehu, Taurama, Kila Kila, 9-mile so it is a struggle,” he said. Skipper Lenadine Koit said it is very exciting to lead the youngsters. “I had doubts about them but then they prove me wrong, so far so good.” “I am happy with the performance from them,” she said. Tomorrow will see Keleiruna Maidens taking on Borders FC at 11am on Bisini ground two.
