Kelowna man thanks firefighters for saving his families home (Kelowna)

One Kelowna family is still recovering from a close call on Sunday when a wildfire sparked in the hills near Rockface Road. Shawn Carefoot's family, including his mother and father, live in the area, and they were staring one of their worst nightmares straight in the face Sunday afternoon. "Mom and dad are OK, I kind of get emotional when I talk about it..." Carefoot says. The fire sparked Sunday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. and spread quickly, moving up the hill towards homes. Carefoot says the blaze was stopped just feet away from the family home, "they used the pool for the water. And then I fought it with them." The home is located in a dead end and the flames were working their way towards the house when the water bombers arrived, "the bombers came in and literally saved the day," Carefoot says. That's the good news; the bad news is that the house and vehicles in the yard are now covered with red retardant. The family was also without power until 3 a.m., and he says even now they are still pretty shaken up. Carefoot says ground crews fought the fire from the top down, and one of the off-duty firefighters on the scene was very helpful, "absolutely amazing guy. He started telling me what to do... once they hit, the first hit, it (the fire) wasn't able to climb much. "I was running hoses with them, helping them out, moving the water, running the water, shovelling, doing the best I could," says Carefoot. Despite the mess left by the retardant, Carefoot says he is beyond grateful for the efforts of the firefighters. "One thing I got to say, man, I appreciate the firefighters, and the bombers, they were quick, and great," says Carefoot. The Whelan Creek wildfire is now listed as 'under control' and the evacuation orders have been lifted for a half dozen properties near Rockface Road. No structural losses have been reported, but property owners should start insurance claims if they suspect wildfire damage. Fire crews continue to work in the area and conduct mop-up operations. Residents are asked to watch for the movement of personnel and equipment in the fire zone. They’re also advised that some smoke may still be seen in burned areas.
