Kohli Mulls Test Retirement Days After Rohit’s Exit, BCCI in Damage Control Mode

According to a report by The Indian Express, Kohli has already informed the BCCI of his decision to retire from Test cricket, triggering widespread concern within the board and among fans.
Kohli, widely celebrated not just for his batting prowess but also for being a vocal ambassador for Test cricket, has often spoken passionately about the importance of preserving the format. His potential exit would not only mark the end of an era but also create a significant leadership and experience vacuum in the Indian red-ball setup.
“He has made up his mind and has informed the board that he is moving on from Test cricket,” a BCCI source told The Indian Express. However, the board is not giving up just yet. Senior BCCI officials have requested Kohli to reconsider, especially with a crucial tour of England looming. As of now, Kohli has not responded to the board’s plea.
The timing could not be more critical. With Rohit already gone and Kohli potentially next, Indian Test cricket faces a generational transition. The loss of two stalwarts — both former captains and modern greats — would significantly impact the team’s experience and stability, particularly in overseas conditions.
Kohli, who last played a Test earlier this year against Australia in Sydney, had shown signs of struggle in recent series, but his influence on and off the field has remained immense. His leadership during India’s historic series wins in Australia and his unwavering commitment to fitness and aggression set a new benchmark in Indian Test cricket.
If Kohli does confirm his retirement, it would signal the close of one of Indian cricket’s most iconic red-ball chapters — a period marked by overseas dominance, fearless cricket, and an obsession with excellence.
