La Jolla Business Roundup: Hand-poke tattoos, bagels, veterinary care, more
@Source: sandiegouniontribune.com
Another month has arrived, and a fresh batch of businesses is open or coming soon to La Jolla and environs. Here’s a look at new places to get a tattoo, grab a bite, take care of your pet or shop to your heart’s desire. Santi Handpoke Tattoo Studio: For the past seven months, Cambodian American tattoo artist Molica Chau had worked at a tattoo shop in Tacoma, Wash. But with a dream to have her own space, she moved to La Jolla and established Santi Handpoke Tattoo Studio, which opened Aug. 1 at 7534 La Jolla Blvd. The rented studio is in the same building as My Reiki RX, which offers what it calls “soul healing,” crystal therapy and more. Chau describes herself as a lifelong artist but said she found true peace when she started tattooing professionally about two years ago. Her style is unique in that she uses hand-poke techniques rather than machines. Her work also has an air of spirituality as she tries to make Santi “feel like a golden hour” and promote mindfulness. Santi’s key values, she said, are safety and trust. “I sometimes use mantras if it’s something I feel that calls me to relay it,” Chau said. “I believe hand-poking is an exchange of energy, so I try to transfer uplifting affirmations when I can to others.” Chau’s studio is available exclusively by appointment. For more information, email chaumolica@gmail.com or visit @santihandpokestudio on Instagram. PopUp Bagels: Breakfast is back on the menu at 637 Pearl St. in La Jolla as a New York bagel chain is set to make its first push into San Diego. PopUp Bagels will take over for Breakfast Republic, which closed its location at the Pearl Street address in March as part of what a representative called a lease buyout from the property owner. PopUp Bagels’ expansion to San Diego was facilitated by San Diego State University graduates Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman, who secured a franchise deal with the corporate team in New York and are now planning 10 PopUp Bagels locations in San Diego County over the next five years. They hope to open the first location on Pearl Street before the end of the year. “Coming soon” signs already have been posted outside the building teasing PopUp’s “tasty, crusty, fluffy, seedy hot bagels.” To find out more, visit popupbagels.com. Pearl Street Pet Hospital: La Jolla’s newest locally owned and operated veterinary care site is coming soon to 801 Pearl St. Pearl Street Pet Hospital, led by Dr. Julianna Wilcox, will offer services including dental care, diagnostics, surgery, urgent care, microchipping and acupuncture, in addition to spaying and neutering, wellness exams and vaccinations. It is a rebrand of The Village Veterinary Hospital on Draper Avenue, which Wilcox bought last year. She says she is moving the clinic to gain more space and offer more services. The new space is on the first floor of a mixed-use lot, with residences above and a gated parking garage below. A free exam is available for anyone who joins the new clinic’s VIP list, which also provides special access to appointments, promotions and resources. Pearl Street Pet Hospital is set for an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. An opening date for services has yet to be announced, although it is expected to be by the end of August. New at Westfield UTC Westfield UTC mall at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive is welcoming several new businesses: • Isabelle’s Cabinet, “a go-to destination for affordable, trendy women’s fashion,” is opening in early August between Joe & the Juice and J.Crew. • PacSun, a clothing and lifestyle brand headquartered in Anaheim, is to open in early August next to Hollister. • Bad Birdie, a golf apparel business, is set to open between Brooklinen and Indochino in early August. • Gen Korean BBQ, a popular restaurant chain with locations across California, will open next to The Escape Game in late August. Also new in La Jolla Taco Time Cantina: “Mexican food you can actually feel great about eating” is now available at 7556 Fay Ave. with the grand opening of Taco Time Cantina on July 26. Cesar Sanchez, one of the restaurant’s founders, comes from a business and opera-singing background. He told the La Jolla Light that food and music are more connected than you might think and that he gives his passion for singing to every taco he makes. Cup of Bloom: This new coffee garden opened next to Bridget’s Blooms last month at 1055 Torrey Pines Road. Cup of Bloom, founded by Eddie Shin and Bridget’s Blooms owner Bridget Lindroth, serves coffee from Coffee Cycle Roasting in Pacific Beach, as well as food from Charlotte Riley of La Jolla-based food delivery service Enjoy and pastries from The French Gourmet restaurant in Pacific Beach. — San Diego Union-Tribune staff writer Lori Weisberg contributed to this report.
