The Los Angeles Lakers pulled off the trade of the century and certainly the trade of the decade, trading for international superstar Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks. The thought was Dallas viewed Dončić as the face of the franchise, and the expectation was that he would spend his entire career in the Lone Star state. However, the Mavericks front office believed he was not the player to invest in long-term, resulting in the trade.Dončić and everyone else in the basketball world thought he would stay in Dallas his entire career. However, now that he is a Laker, the expectation is that he will spend his entire career in Los Angeles.Lakers fans want that, and so does the front office, which has the utmost confidence that he can be the face of the franchise for the next decade or so.On Tuesday, ESPN's Shams Charania appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and noted how he expects Dončić's loyalty to 'carry over' to the Lakers."I know in talking to people around Luka Doncic over the past 72 hours, I was at that Lakers-Clippers game on Sunday, he had no intention of ever leaving Dallas," said Charania. "He had just bought a new home in Dallas for a lofty, lofty price. He did not want to go anywhere."You think of a player coming from abroad. They are very committed. They are loyal. That's how he viewed himself with the Mavericks. One team, one city, forever. I think that's going to carry over to the Lakers. I think he's loving his time in L.A."I think he's loving how the Lakers ... you think about what the Lakers' brand is, it's treating stars like stars. It's Hollywood, it's making the star players bigger than life. And that's what we're going to see with Luka Doncic."The Lakers can get started on that this summer. On Aug. 2, Dončić becomes eligible to sign an extension with the Lakers for as much as $229 million over five years.Another option for Dončić is a three-year, $165 million extension with a player option for 28-29, which coincides with his 10 years of service when he can sign at the 35 percent max. Nonetheless, the Lakers will do all they can to ensure he wears the purple and gold for the rest of his career.More news: Mavericks Star Anthony Davis Could Now Miss Rest of Season Following Kyrie Irving InjuryMavericks' Reported "Issues" With Lakers' Luka Doncic Come to LightFor more NBA news and rumors, make sure to tune in to Newsweek Sports.
