Leinster thrash Glasgow Warriors in Champions Cup quarter-final
@Source: irishmirror.ie
Leinster 52Glasgow Warriors 0Leinster were in no mood to take prisoners and battered Glasgow from the get-go, a blinding second quarter putting them miles out of sight on the scoreboard.It is the second week in a row Leinster have piled on Champions Cup scoring in Dublin.Last Saturday there were 10 touchdowns as the Blues crushed Harlequins at Croke Park, this week there were eight tries as Warriors were cut down at the Aviva.Jordie Barrett, restored to the team following being asked to sit on the bench last week, was deserved Man of the Match adding a superb last hour to one of the most remarkable first quarters ever witnessed in a Blues shirt. "I'm very proud of this performance, we'd a good week, because we respect Glasgow as a side," said Barrett afterwards. "They've scored the most tries across the two competitions, they're a good side so it was imperative we started well. "That was the question Leo posed to us this week, I suppose it's easy to get up for a side to get up once but you need to show a bit of character to come back a week later and do the same thing." Complacency wasn't an option continued the All Black. "It can, but that was our challenge and if you care enough you won't let that be. We paid Glasgow full respect, we prepared really well and we had to work for it early on." And the attack had paid off in spades as Leinster moved on to the semi-finals. "It's something we've been working on, it's nice to get a bit of transfer and put it out there when it matters. Look, you can only beat the team put in front of you. You have to keep getting better. We'll cross that (semi-final) bridge when it comes, we've just got to get better every week and take care of what's in front of us and jump back into the URC next week." "The 52 points is nice, but the zero is extra pleasing. We showed a lot of great control and intent with our defence, it's nice to get both parts right but we've got to keep getting better." Lions coach Andy Farrell was in the Aviva and sitting beside Leinster Backs Coach Tyler Bleyendaal in the stand. Such was Sam Prendergast's performance that he must assuredly be in prime position to be selected for the summer tour to Australia. The player is coming along, week by week, in leaps and bounds.There were also superb performances from the two players who most raised eyebrows when team selection was announced, winger Tommy O'Brien and flanker Max Deegan, while veteran Cian Healy was given the first 30 minutes before being called ashore.That both sides had come to play open, running rugby was evident from the opening exchanges where two excellent distance-making clearances were fired back immediately into play by Kyle Steyn and James Lowe.Barrett was soon showing why he is a superstar hanging around in these parts, he created a 'try' that was ruled out, then made the first try and, then, covering back and getting into a position to save a try, he emerged to break out with the ball and clear to touch - all in the first quarter.Interestingly, and Leinster management can't but have noticed, this last play was met by a huge roar of approval from the crowd.If the low attendance, 22,400, is a sure sign these were Leinster's die-hard customers it suggests there is a level of respect that wants to see him play.Deegan opened the scoring in the 15th minute by lurking wide and being the extra man on the end and the game was finished as a contest in the 23rd minute when Glasgow committed hari-kari.A complete lack of understanding as to what to do in an emergency saw left-winger Steyn, near his own line, change direction and try to make it through four Leinster defenders.The wolf pack swallowed Steyn whole, turned over the ball and going left Leinster were denied a try by a deliberate knock-on that resulted in a penalty-try and a yellow card for out-half Adam Hastings.Two minutes later James Lowe had scored in the corner, seven minutes later O'Brien beat two meen to score, 10 minutes later Hastings returned to watch Hugo Keenan score from a Sam Prendergast grubber. So, 7-0 after 20 minutes, 33-0 after 34 minutes and at half-time.The second-half turned out a much slower affair in terms of scores and, almost inevitably pace.Garry Ringrose got the first of Leinster's three tries when, having made a superb bust down the middle, he dragged a heap of defenders over the line with him. Josh van der Flier produced an over the heads basketball pass to get Dan Sheehan over the corner for a second.There was just one score in the last quarter, Leinster butchering two good chances on either side of the pitch before coming left again where Ross Byrne crafted a delicate chip for Deegan to get into the corner, his second try of the game.Leinster: Hugo Keenan; Tommy O'Brien, Garry Ringrose, Jordie Barrett, James Lowe; Sam Prendergast, Jamison Gibson-Park; Cian Healy, Ronan Kelleher, Tadhg Furlong, Joe McCarthy, RG Snyman, Max Deegan, Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan captReplacements: Dan Sheehan for Kelleher 48, Andrew Porter for Healy 30, Rabah Slimani for 55, Diarmuid Mangan for Snyman 62, Caelan Doris for Conan 14, Luke McGrath for Gibson-Park 55, Ross 0Byrne for Prendergast 6, Robbie Henshaw for Ringrose 55Glasgow Warriors: Kyle Rowe; Jamie Dobie, Stafford McDowall, Tom Jordan, Kyle Steyn capt; Adam Hastings, George Horne; Nathan McBeth, Johnny Matthews, Sam Talakai, Gregor Brown, Alex Samuel, Matt Fagerson, Rory Darge, Sione VailanuReplacements: Grant Stewart for Matthews 48, Jamie Bhatti for McBeth 48, Patrick Schickerling for Talakai 61, JP du Preez for Vailanu 33, Max Williamson for Brown 61, Euan Ferrie for Talakai 55, Ben Afshar for Horne 61, Sebastian Cancelliere for Fagerson 47 Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email.
