Romania won its first match in the water polo Group A at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, as they beat South Africa 24 – 5 on Monday. On Saturday, in the first game, Romania was defeated by the defending world vice-champions, Italy, 17 – 5. A match with Serbia follows on Wednesday. At the 2024 championships, the Romanian polo players ranked 10th.
This year’s 3rd Grand Slam ended on Sunday at Wimbledon. The women’s title went to the Polish Iga Swiatek, and the men’s trophy went to the Italian Jannik Sinner. Sorana Cîrstea was the best of the Romanian participants in the senior competitions. In the women’s doubles, she reached the quarterfinals, alongside Russia’s Ana Kalinskaia. The two players missed the semis after being defeated by the Taiwanese Su-wei Hsies and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. The Romanian-Russian pair received a check for GBP 87,500 and 430 WTA points. For Cîrstea, this was the best result at a Grand Slam tournament in the doubles event.
While on tour in South America, the Romanian national rugby team was defeated in Montevideo by Uruguay, 70-8. “Los Teros” scored 11 tries in this match. Romania’s points were brought by Alexandru Bucur, who scored a try, and Antonio Mitrea, who converted a penalty kick. Romania had five first-timers in its line-up: Ştefan Cojocariu, Alexandru Harasim, Lukas Mitu, Toma Mîrzac and David Rafael Florea Jilăveanu. In their first match played in the current South American tournament, the national team lost to Chile, on July 5 (40 – 16).
Over the weekend, games counting towards the first round of the Romanian Football Super League took place. On Friday, Universitatea Cluj beat Metaloglobus 4-1 in Bucharest, and Rapid won away from home against FC Argeş 2-0. On Saturday, in Arad, UTA and Universitatea Craiova finished in a draw, 3 – 3. The game in Bucharest between FCSB and Hermannstadt also ended in a draw, 1 – 1. On Sunday, in Galaţi, a goalless match between Oţelul and Petrolul Ploieşti was followed in Cluj, by a CFR win against Unirea Slobozia 2-1. On Monday, the last games of the first round: FC Botoșani vs Farul Constanta and Csikszereda vs Dinamo Bucharest. (AMP)
