Leinster v Bulls: South African veterans priming side for 'desperate' battle for URC trophy

Bulls warrior Marcel Coetzee says Saturday's URC final pits two desperate teams against each other at Croke Park. Coetzee, 34, has plenty of experience of facing Irish provinces - he was with Ulster for two injury-hit seasons - and playing against Ireland for the Springboks. And the huge rivalry that has developed between South African and Irish rugby in recent years will add to the occasion, the back row predicts, as the Bulls chase a first URC final win in three attempts and Leinster push for their first in four years. "It all builds up to desperation from both sides this weekend, so you can expect a massive clash with a lot of energy and a lot of intensity," said Coetzee. "If you take the two countries that participate in the URC, we had the Stormers against Munster in the final and we always had to play Leinster in the semi-finals. "Both countries' representatives are phenomenal when it comes to play-offs. And last season, Glasgow, we played them in the final and came up short there. We had some good battles, building up to this, in the semis and finals, and I think I expect this weekend won't be any different." Plenty of the Bulls players have worked with Leinster's senior coach Jacques Nienaber in the past - the man who developed the province's blitz defence. The Bulls got the better of Leinster's system in last year's semi-final. "We understand what to expect from their defensive line," acknowledged Coetzee. "But that's one area of the game - we identified a lot of areas that we might exploit this weekend, without oversharing. But it's going to come down to work-rate, to being composed, making the right decisions at the right time and just handling the kicking game as well." Bulls full-back Willie le Roux turned Leinster on numerous occasions in last year's encounter. The 35-year-old insists the key to success for Jake White's side is to enjoy themselves and treat the final like any other game. "We have been enjoying ourselves this season, playing for one another," the 35-year-old said. "It has got us to the final. It's about doing the same thing that we have been doing the whole year. "I don’t think there's any need to put added pressure onto us. It's all about playing for each other, playing for your brother next to you, and playing for Cornal (Hendricks), our friend that we have lost. That's our focus. "It will be a huge battle. Finals are fine margins. Whether it's at home or away, these games come down to maybe one moment, one mistake you might make, one piece of brilliance someone else does. "They all say it's mission impossible, but we'll have to wait and see on Saturday. The bit of advice I can give younger guys as we play together is that it is the same as playing the first game of the season. "We got here through taking chances - we see an opportunity, we take it. Try and ask for the ball, get your hands on the ball and do as much as you can. You might lose a few battles but it’s about getting back up and putting yourself into as many as you can. And have no doubts. It's all about Saturday." Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts.
