Liverpool and Arsenal’s Champions League final route clearer as opponents emerge
@Source: dailystar.co.uk
Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa are a step closer to finding out how their route to Champions League glory looks. The three Premier League clubs booked their place in the round of 16 automatically after finishing in the top 8 of the newly-revamped Champions League league phase. While those three English clubs avoided the knockout play-off round, their potential knockout stage opponents began to book their place. Following the draw that took place last month, league-toppers Liverpool or 2nd place Barcelona were drawn to play either Brest, PSG, Monaco or Benfica. Arsenal or Inter Milan would face either Juventus, PSV, Feyenoord or AC Milan. While Villa or Lille could have been drawn against Club Brugge, Atalanta, Sporting Lisbon or Borussia Dortmund. Tuesday night’s action saw the bracket begin to take shape as Feyenoord stunned AC Milan to book their place in the next round in the night’s early kick-off. The Dutch giants held 10-man Milan to a 1-1 draw at San Siro to set up a last 16 clash with either Arsenal or Inter. A depleted Feyenoord team, who are dealing with ten injuries, including captain Quinten Timber being ruled out for the rest of the season, led 1-0 from the first-leg at De Kuip. The Rotterdam side went behind inside the opening minute but found the vital equaliser in the 73rd minute to see them progress. Later on in the night, Benfica advanced to the next round after edging past Monaco in an enthralling 3-3 draw to set up a tie against Liverpool or Barcelona. Benfica held a 1-0 advantage following their victory in the principality. However, Monaco led twice on the night but Benfica forced a draw to brush through. Meanwhile, Club Brugge stunned Atalanta as the Belgian side advanced to face either Villa or Lille in the next round. Having secured a two-goal advantage at home last week, Club Brugge led 3-0 at half-time in Bergamo to all but kill the tie before a consolation by Ademola Lookman reduced the aggregate score to 3-1. Elsewhere in the Champions League, Bayern survived a major scare against Celtic. Having been beaten 2-1 in the first-leg at Celtic Park, the Bhoys wasted vital chances to take the lead against the Bavarian giants. The Bhoys took a deserved lead shortly after the hour mark through Nicolas Kuhn. But Alphonso Davies bundled home a parried effort in the last minute of added time to save the Bavarians by the skin of their teeth. The draw for the round of 16 takes place on February 21 following the conclusion of all the knockout play-off round ties – including Manchester City ’s second leg clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday, where the Premier League champions trial 3-2 on aggregate.
