Liverpool fans wear t-shirts mocking Sir Alex Ferguson vow as Reds equal Man Utd
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Liverpool fans donned t-shirts and scarfs declaring that they were "back on their perch" after equalling Manchester United on 20 top-flight titles. Sir Alex Ferguson famously said he planned to "knock Liverpool off their perch". His trophy-laden period at Old Trafford saw the Red Devils ascend to the top of English football and, when he left in 2013, he landed the 20th title in the club's history. Liverpool meanwhile had gone more than 20 years without one and sat on 18. In the years since Liverpool have returned to those dizzying heights with United falling away in the meantime. Jurgen Klopp's title in 2020 put them on 19 and their dominant season this term under Arne Slot has seen them registered a 20th triumph. Liverpool celebrated with their adoring fanbase at Anfield after beating Tottenham 5-1 on Sunday. After which the players lapped up the atmosphere with the stadium draped in red. Several fans were seen wearing t-shirts making light of Ferguson's comment - whilst scarfs were also on show with the same sentiment - mocking his "perch" remark. United have declined massively in the years since Ferguson's departure and the Scot has had to watch several of his former rivals dominate the Premier League . Liverpool themselves have enjoyed numerous days out at Old Trafford, winning there 3-0 early in the season. Gary Neville confessed that the "bread and butter" of the league has often been the greatest barometer of a team and United held the bragging rights in that department until the weekend. Liverpool have a clear edge in Europe, winning the European Cup on six occasions with the Red Devils claiming it three times. As a result, the Sky Sports pundit was left to concede that the debate over who is the greatest English club is currently over. He said: "The accolade of the most successful club, you could debate it maybe when United were on 20 titles because obviously Liverpool have more European Cups. But once Liverpool get level, the painful thing to say is that unfortunately the debate is over for a period until Manchester United become successful again and win leagues." Ferguson has been left to rue several comments he made during his time in charge on the red half of Manchester. Even though Manchester City saw the arrival of their billions the Scot declared "never in my lifetime" would they go into a Manchester derby as favourites. In reality that has been a regular occurrence and, although United took four points off City this season, those from the blue half of Manchester have enjoyed huge dominance over the past decade with Ferguson in attendance for many of their commanding wins.
