Livingston boss David Martindale says cup win won't affect promotion push

David Martindale insists winning the SPFL Trust Trophy will have no bearing on their promotion push this season – but says it is in their own hands. Livingston thumped Queen’s Park 5-0 at the Falkirk Stadium on Sunday to take the trophy back to West Lothian for a second time, and a first triumph in 10 years. Goals from Robbie Muirhead and Stevie May had the Lions 2-0 up and cruising by half-time, with Tete Yengi, Andrew Shinnie and Jamie Brandon adding strikes in the second half. Martindale says winning the Challenge Cup will have no bearing on their promotion push, but says they have a good chance. He said: “The primary objective at the start of the year wasn’t winning a cup, it was getting the club back to the Premiership. “That trumps anything we want to do or are going to do. “I’d love to say yes, it will have a bearing on promotion, but I think it’s going to have nothing to do with it, if I’m honest. “Everybody talks about if you win this game you get momentum – if it worked like that, everybody would be winning. “It will probably not play a part, but second place is in our hands, and if we can finish second we’ve got a right good chance. “It’s a big ask for third or fourth. I’m not saying you can’t do it, but I think it’s a big ask. “If we go and win the next game and Falkirk drop three points, who knows what can happen, but it’s in Falkirk’s hands at this point.” Martindale was set to lock horns with former Celtic captain and manager Neil Lennon at Dunfermline on Wednesday night before hosting Queen’s Park on Saturday. He said: “The next big game is on Wednesday night, and really that’s where all my focus is. “Dunfermline in midweek is a big game. You’ve got a manager going in there who has played and managed in Champions League football, won massive trophies at Celtic, so he knows what he’s doing. “It’s going to make the game a wee bit more difficult for us.” While pleased to have won silverware this season, Martindale says he doesn’t take personal satisfaction from it. He said: “I don’t really get that. I struggle with that, if I’m honest. I won League One, I won the Petrofac 10 years ago, got through the Premiership play-offs, but I don’t take anything from it.”
