Former Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit has revealed his intention to return to rugby following an 18-month stint in the NFL. Rees-Zammit secured a spot on the Jacksonville Jaguars' active roster for the 2025 season after spending 2024 on their practice squad. He also travelled with the team to London for their October matchups against the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots. The 24-year-old earned 32 caps for Wales before stepping away from rugby union in January 2024 to chase his ambition of playing in the NFL through the International Player Pathway Program. Rees-Zammit said in a post on Instagram: "I've got an exciting announcement to make! I've decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby! "It's been a great experience, but it's time to come home. I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season. "There's only one thing that's on my mind, that's coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can't explain how excited I am!! "There'll be more news to come soon but for now, see you soon rugby fans." The announcement is expected to be a timely boost for newly-appointed Wales head coach Steve Tandy, who inherits a team that only snapped an 18-match losing streak, spanning nearly two years, with a gritty victory over Japan last month. Rees-Zammit was part of the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 2021. Notably, Andy Farrell’s starting XV for the opening Test against Australia on this summer’s tour marked the first Lions Test side since 1896 to feature no Welsh players.
