Ludvig Aberg Contrasts Akshay Bhatia's Texas Open Approach with Masters Looming
@Source: newsweek.com
Ludvig Aberg and Akshay Bhatia have different goals for this week when they both play the Valero Texas Open. Not that they are not thinking about winning the event, but their approach to the present and the near future is quite different.Bhatia, the defending champion of the event, comes to TPC San Antonio with the idea of using it as a springboard for next week."I feel like it's just another week," Bhatia said ahead of the Valero Texas Open. "I have my mind really set on Augusta next week so it's a great week on this golf course to kind of learn where my game's at, what kind of shots I need to improve on for next week.""It's a great golf course for that, very narrow, very tricky. It's obviously going to be windy here. I just kind of feel normal."Aberg, meanwhile, did not deny the role the Valero Texas Open will play in his preparation for the season's first major when he spoke at the TPC San Antonio."I like playing the week before [The Masters] just to sort of -- now that I had two weeks off, I don't want to say rust, I don't like the word rust, but there's getting into tournament mode and the golf course really prepares you for that," he said."It's a challenging golf course and you need to be very specific with your targets just like at Augusta where you have -- obviously need to be on the correct side of things. This is a good way to prepare for that."But unlike Bhatia, the Swedish star has not taken his thoughts much further than this week."But when I'm here and playing, I don't really care about Augusta," he said, "I'm trying to be where I am and try to play well in this tournament, and then come Monday next week we'll focus on Augusta."So far this season has been a good one for Aberg, who won the first Signature event of his career at Torrey Pines (Genesis Invitational) a month ago. He also tied for fifth at The Sentry and tied for 22nd at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.He did, however, miss the cut at The PLAYERS Championship two weeks ago.Bhatia, meanwhile, has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts, with one missed cut in between (Arnold Palmer Invitational). That streak includes his best finish of the season, a tie for third at The PLAYERS.The 25-year-old Swede has played in the Valero Texas Open twice, in 2022, when he missed the cut as an amateur, and in 2024, when he tied for 14th.The 23-year-old American, on the other hand, has played the TPC San Antonio event three times, winning once and missing the cut once.More Golf: Ex-College Star Who Traded Tour for Air Force is Happily Back at Augusta
