Nearly two decades after Madeleine McCann vanished during a family holiday in Portugal, her younger twin siblings are quietly forging their own futures away from the spotlight that has long surrounded their family. Amelie and Sean McCann, who were just toddlers when their sister went missing in Praia da Luz in May 2007, are now 20 years old and thriving in their respective universities. According to a close family member, the twins are not only succeeding academically but also making their mark in athletics. Throughout the ordeal, her parents Gerry and Kate McCann have been unwavering in their quest to discover what happened to their daughter - recently stating their "determination to leave no stone unturned is unwavering" - while also raising their twins, Amelie and Sean. Their great-uncle, Brian Kennedy, spoke to Mail Online about how Kate and Gerry are extremely "pleased" with the twins' accomplishments, noting their success in sports. Amelie, who has participated in cross country and triathlon competitions, is currently studying at a university in the north of England, reports the Mirror . Meanwhile, Sean, who excels in freestyle swimming and is expected to represent Scotland at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, may even compete for Team GB in Los Angeles at the 2028 Olympics. At just ten years old, he was chosen to swim for City of Leicester, leading to a string of successes including multiple county titles and becoming regional and national champion in his age group. He shared on a local website, "At the age of ten, I was selected to swim at City of Leicester, and I have since gone on to win multiple county titles, as well as becoming regional and national champion in my age group." His commitment to the sport is evident, as he revealed, "In order to have achieved this, I have had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train." In 2023, Sean represented Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games, where he competed in the finals for both the 400m and 1500m Freestyle events. Balancing his rigorous training regime, which demands 20 hours per week in the pool and gym, Sean is also pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, studying at a different university than his sister. Meanwhile, despite the heartbreak over their daughter Madeleine's disappearance, Kate and Gerry McCann strive to maintain normalcy in their lives, with both reportedly returning to their professional careers. Gerry holds positions as a research professor in experimental medicine and a professor of cardiac imaging at the University of Leicester. Kate, who worked as a GP prior to Madeleine's disappearance, re-entered the healthcare field during the Covid pandemic, focusing her efforts on helping dementia patients and serving as an ambassador for the charity Missing People.
