Man arrested following Ariva bus ticket dispute
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
A passenger was arrested following a 'ticket dispute' on a bus in Liverpool. Police received a report of a 'disturbance' on a service on Sir Thomas Street at around 2pm on July 20. Officers attended and a man was arrested and shortly de-arrested. There were no offences identified and the incident appeared to have been a civil matter, police said. Ali Sabri, 23, from Liverpool city centre, was the man who was arrested and claims he has been treated unfairly, the Liverpool Echo reports . Ali says the problem started when his Merseyside Plus Summer Holiday UniRider ticket did not scan on the Arriva 471 bus. After telling the driver the ticket was valid, he claims a row ensued, resulting in police being called. When contacted for a response, Arriva apologised that the ticket would not scan and said it has launched an investigation. But the QR code didn’t work and the bus driver refused to inspect it properly. It didn’t scan. This has happened before and I have let Arriva know. “I asked the bus driver to call his supervisor. He responded by saying his supervisor was playing golf. Then he called the police. “When the police arrived, I explained the situation. One of the police officers asked to provide my name when there was no reasonable grounds to do so. I was told the police had called because I was causing anti-social behaviour. "They told me to provide a name and address. I refused and was then told I was being arrested under section 30 of the police reform act. "They found my driving licence in my bag, found the information they needed and I was de-arrested.” Ali, who works in hospitality, denies he was causing anti-social behaviour and insists he is not at fault at all. He has requested bodycam footage from the police of his arrest. He said: “It’s now in police records but I haven’t done anything wrong. "It’s not fair for all this to happen over a bus ticket. It doesn’t make sense. “I’ve been advised (by Arriva) to use Stagecoach now which isn’t fair. I can’t afford to pay for a taxi either.” Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE An Arriva spokesperson told the ECHO: “We’re sorry that the customer experienced a technical issue using the Merseyside Plus Summer Holiday UniRider ticket on our 471 service. "We are undertaking an investigation into why this ticket failed to scan.”
