Marcus Rashford transfer hopes damaged but Aston Villa stance is clear

Marcus Rashford wants to join Barcelona this summer, but his hopes of sealing a move may well have been damaged. That’s because Barcelona are edging closer to landing former Aston Villa target Nico Williams. The Athletic Club winger has reportedly agreed terms with Barça ahead of signing a six-year deal. Williams is expected to receive up to €8m net per season from Barcelona, who are now working with Athletic Club to strike an agreement on the structure of the deal. Williams is known to have a buy-out clause of £50m, which is only £10m more than what Manchester United want for Rashford. Villa hold a £40m option to sign Rashford but did not have first refusal, and after failing to qualify for the Champions League, a move is seen as remote at this stage. However, Emery loves what Rashford brought to his squad in the second half of last season and would welcome him back if it were financially possible. Perhaps a loan move for Rashford is most likely, given that few clubs would be willing to part with £40m, as the forward’s wages are huge. Even for Barcelona, this could be an issue. That’s because to register Williams, the Catalan giants need to generate the headroom in their wage budget, which is preventing a deal from being concluded immediately. It is expected that Barça will find a way to register Williams - but could Rashford’s wages be taken on too? It could leave Rashford’s future up in the air once more, though reports in Spain claim that the England international is hopeful he can still seal a move, as he offers versatility across the frontline. If Barça can’t accommodate Rashford, he’ll have few options on the table. Villa could be one, if they can find room in their wage structure, but without Champions League football, Rashford will give other clubs priority. After the end of last season, following Villa’s final-day defeat at Man United, Rashford’s Instagram message felt like a goodbye. He wrote: “Just a message of thanks to everyone here at Villa for what has (injury aside) been an incredible few months for me. “It is a really special club and I appreciated the way Villa fans embraced me with open arms from 1st minute on the pitch. “Manager, team, and coaching staff have all been brilliant. I know it is a huge disappointment not to have made the Champions League place which everyone worked so hard all season for but I know this club and team will come back stronger.”
