Martin Lewis has issued a warning after today’s announcement that the energy price cap will rise by 6.4% . On his Money Show , the Money Saving Expert explained how this increase could charge consumers on default tariffs for each unit of energy will affect them. Lewis said: “In simple terms, every £100 you pay now, will cost £106.40 from April. Remember, it is not a cap on what you pay, if you use more, you’ll pay more.” This comes as Energy bills are set to soar once more for countless UK homes as Ofgem announces its new price cap hike . The company said an extra 6.4% will be added – though the real damage to your wallet depends on your gas and electricity usage. For the average person paying by direct debit, you're looking at your annual energy bill jumping from £1,738 to a whopping £1,849 from April 1 – that's £111 more to pay. This is the third time in just a few months that we've been hit with a hike, after a 10% increase last October and another 1.2% rise in January. Ofgem often tweaks its price cap every quarter, so these new rates are sticking around until June 30 before they review it. Jonathan Brearley, CEO at Ofgem, said: "We know that no price rise is ever welcome, and that the cost of energy remains a huge challenge for many households. But our reliance on international gas markets leads to volatile wholesale prices, and continues to drive up bills, which is why it's more important than ever that we're driving forward investment in a cleaner, homegrown system. "Energy debts that began during the energy crisis have reached record levels and without intervention will continue to grow. This puts families under huge stress and increases costs for all customers. "We're developing plans that could give households with unmanageable debt the clean slate they need to move forward."
