RENOWNED visual artist Owen Maseko found himself on the wrong side of the law last week after being arrested at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo for possession of marijuana.
Maseko was taken into custody by officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Thursday, June 13, 2025, after 28 grammes of dagga were allegedly found in his possession.
He was subsequently charged with Possession of Dangerous Drugs.
The following day, on June 14, Maseko appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to the charge.
He was fined US$30 which he paid immediately.
After signing a warned and cautioned statement, he was released from police custody.
Maseko spent the night at Bulawayo Central Police Station before the case was processed at the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit in Southampton by Detective Assistant Inspector Mbaraja.
The artist was legally represented by Nhlalwenhle Dube, who facilitated his release and managed proceedings on his behalf.
Though the fine was minimal and the case swiftly resolved, the incident has sparked conversation among fans and fellow artists, many of whom were surprised by the news.
Maseko, who is known for his politically provocative artworks and installations, has not yet made a public statement regarding the arrest.
