Former England captain Michael Vaughan wants to see Virat Kohli return as skipper of the Indian Test team after the retirement of Rohit Sharma and have Shubman Gill act as his deputy in India’s upcoming series against the Three Lions. “If I was India I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England .. Shubman Gill can be his VC for the tour,” Michael Vaughan posted on X, formerly Twitter. If I was India I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England .. Shubman Gill can be his VC for the tour .. #India ? — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) May 11, 2025 Indian selectors are set to meet to pick the Indian team for the tour of England, and a decision will be announced by the end of the third week of May, while the India A team will be announced early next week. According to sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the 36-year-old stalwart recently communicated his intention to step away from the longest format of the game. While the cricket fraternity is taken aback by talismanic Kohli’s wish to retire from Test cricket, it has been learnt that the selection committee did ponder over the idea of handing over leadership to him in England to allow Gill some more time to groom. As of now, Kohli has not made any official announcement, and it is believed that he will be requested to compete in the upcoming five-Test series in England, as his experience will be required in challenging conditions, especially when Rohit Sharma has also announced his Test retirement. The BCCI, however, is tight-lipped on its conversation with Kohli with regards to his Test career. As per a report in PTI, Gill is set to take charge of the national team in the traditional format. The choice of vice-captain seems to be a straightforward one, being Rishabh Pant, as Jasprit Bumrah can’t be considered for the role of deputy due to his stature and also when his own fitness is iffy, making him uncertain for the full series. Kohli, who made his Test debut in 2011, has represented India in 123 Tests, scoring 9230 runs at an average of 46.85. He also led India in 68 Tests, making him the country’s most successful captain in the format. His intensity, fitness, and leadership transformed India into a dominant Test side both at home and overseas. (With inputs from Agencies)
