Midlands road where nearly 7,000 drivers caught by average speed cameras already this year

Nearly 7,000 drivers have been caught out by average speed cameras on a busy Birmingham road in the first half of this year. It serves as a warning to speeding motorists that they are likely to be caught out along Lee Bank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway. Cameras operating here snapped 6,852 vehicles from the start of January to the end of May - around 45 every day on average. It makes it one of the average speed camera hotspots in Birmingham, with only New John Street West clocking up more offences so far this year. Lee Bank Middleway joins onto Belgrave Middleway running south of the city centre, not far from Edgbaston Stadium, and cameras operate on the busy route monitoring traffic. West Midlands average speed camera hotspots The route is second only to A4540 New John Street West. Almost 8,900 offences were recorded on the route, which runs between Hockley Circus and Dartmouth Circus, in the fist half of 2025 - roughly 60 every day on average. It confirms average speed cameras are very much working in our region and are not just for show, as some motorists may mistakenly believe. Rather than fixed cameras which allow motorists to suddenly slow down, average speed cameras measure vehicles' speeds over a sustained period, keeping drivers guessing about how long they are being monitored for.
