Min Woo Lee's 'Controversial' Pattern That Has Led to Houston Open Dominance
@Source: newsweek.com
Min Woo Lee responded to Scottie Scheffler's historic 62 on Friday with a 63 on Saturday to take the lead at the Houston Open. Best of all for him, his super low score brought him a comfortable four-shot lead with only 18 holes to play.However, the Aussie revealed after the round that part of his preparation for the final round will be to make up for a controversial deficit from the day before."Yeah, I need a good night's rest. It's tough, I kind of -- I don't know if it's controversial, but I talked to my fellow friends and we finished at 8:00 last night and we have to wake up at 5:00," he said."The time from you to get off the course to have dinner to go into your bed, you only have like five, six hours of sleep, so it's not really healthy I'd say. And I'm a great sleeper, and there's guys that can't sleep out on Tour and they have a tough time falling asleep""That's it. But no, I think just a good night's rest would be good. I'm proud of the way I handled myself today and hopefully I can do it again tomorrow."His Moving Day performance is certainly something to be proud of, whether he got enough sleep or not. Lee carded seven birdies and no bogeys, and led the field in total strokes gained for the day (5.087).His previous scores were also outstanding. On Thursday, he carded seven birdies and three bogeys for a 4-under 66, and a day later his card included eight birdies and two bogeys for a 6-under 64.His main strength this week has been his putting. Lee has gained 7.904 strokes with the putter-in-hand, the best in the field through the first 54 holes. He is also the leader in total strokes gained with an astronomical 13.394."Very solid day again," Lee said about his overall performance. "The last couple days were really good...it's just trending so well. My coach and I, Richie, have done really good work and it's starting to show. It's just a lot of trust."Lee has never won in his 55 career PGA Tour starts. His best results are two runner-up finishes and four other top-10s (37 cuts made).But he is now in prime position to reach that milestone. According to golf statistician Justin Ray, 25 of the 31 players who entered the final round on the PGA Tour with a lead of four shots or more have won the tournament, based on data from the past 10 years.In 2025, the 26-year-old has played six tournaments with five cuts made. He has no top 10s, but did finish tied for 11th at the Cognizant Classic. Lee also led for the first 36 holes at The PLAYERS Championship, but eventually melted down and finished tied for 20th.More Golf: Gary Woodland's inspiring story continues at Texas Children's Houston Open
