‘Motorheads’ Star Mia Healey’s Career Keeps Accelerating After ‘The Wilds’: “I’m Definitely A ‘Hit The Gas’ Girl”
@Source: decider.com
Motorheads is Prime Video’s latest teen drama masterpiece. Centering around the fictional small town of Ironwood, the show follows a rag-tag group of outsiders with one thing in common: their love of automobiles and racing. But underneath the surface of the Pennsylvanian rust-belt town lies generational secrets, a bank heist, and the looming dangers of the street-racing community — oh, and a few love triangles. Actress Mia Healey, who plays the girl next door Alicia Whitaker, recently stopped by DECIDER’s studio to break down the binge-worthy series. Having had her breakout role on Prime Video’s The Wilds, Healey’s acting career is showing no signs of slowing down — which makes sense since she told DECIDER she’s “definitely a ‘hit the gas’ kind of girl.” Alicia is introduced to the series as Harris Bowers’ (Josh Macqueen) girlfriend. While Harris is a rich, entitled street-racer with a vendetta against Zac Torres (Michael Cimino) and his group of car junkies, Alicia is a kind, soft-spoken horse girl who does everything she can to see the best in people, which is why Zac quickly takes a liking to her. Speaking about Alicia’s long-awaited first kiss with Zac on a racetrack beneath the stars following her breakup with Harris, Healey said, “Taking that chance was a big step for her and I was really excited for her on that day.” Outside of Alicia’s love life, which is sure to be explored even more if Motorheads gets renewed for Season 2 (and it better after that cliffhanger!), she’s a supportive friend to Kiara Gibbons (Johnna Dias-Watson) amid her growing feelings for Caitlyn Torres (Melissa Collazo). With Kiara’s mom being unaccepting of her daughter’s sexuality and her ex-boyfriend constantly making homophobic gibes, Healey thought it “was great” that Alicia could be a “support system” for her best friend. The Australian actress also talked about working with Ryan Phillippe, why she’d like Motorheads to get renewed for another season sooner rather than later, and where she thinks her character in The Wilds would be today. Check out the full interview. DECIDER: I’m so excited to have you here. I’m going to start with a bit of an ice breaker: are you the type of person to step on the brakes or the gas? MIA HEALEY: I feel like I’m definitely a hit the gas girl, probably to a fault. I feel like maybe I could employ some brakes at times, but I think I’m probably more of a gas person. Motorheads is so good and it’s giving old-school teen drama vibes. In One Tree Hill, the town revolved around basketball. In Friday Night Lights, the town revolved around football. In Motorheads, the town revolves around racing. What’s it like to be part of something like that? Oh my gosh, it’s amazing. I mean, because those are the shows that I watched growing up. So it feels really iconic to be part of something that feels so reminiscent of the stuff that I used to watch. It has that kind of nostalgic feeling to it, which is great. Speaking of racing, did the cast get to go on any joy rides with real pros when everyone was off the clock? If so, what was that like? We didn’t. I mean, I didn’t. I think some of the guys – I know Drake [Rodger] did a stunt driving course before filming, which is super cool. But together, I guess we just kind of hung out. We kind of tried to once a week or every time an episode would come out all get together and read the episode together and spend as much time doing that. And yeah, just spending time hanging out. But yeah, no I hadn’t done any of the driving stuff. I’m nervous about the driving stuff. I’m Australian. I don’t drive on this side of the road. It can be scary! And dangerous if you’re not with the right driver. Yeah, it was crazy watching the stunt guys do it because I was like, “Oh, shit. You guys are really doing this. This is intense.” They’re so cool. Ryan Phillippe said he felt like Yoda on-set. What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten from him? What did he teach you about the “old days”? I mean, I didn’t really have any scenes with him, so it was really rare that we were on set at the same time. But any time that we did have time to chat, I mean, he’s just the nicest guy and so great. And it was great seeing him at the premiere. And yeah, he’s a legend. Ryan’s son Deacon plays his brother Christian in the show! How wild is that? Were you ever around the both of them on set? I’ve been on set with them, but not really in the same scene. So kind of just around like trailers and stuff, but both are both amazing guys. He’s great and I’m so excited for everyone to see it. One thing about the cast is everyone is pretty well into their 20s. What was it like for you to go back to high school and channel your teenage years again? Did you see any part of your high school self in Alicia? Oh, that’s a good question. I did in a lot of ways. I also didn’t in a lot of ways. I feel like I grew up in a kind of small town, so I felt like I could connect to her that way. But I mean, her life story is crazy different. She’s ultra rich and stuff like that. But it was funny going back in time, I guess you could say, to high school days. I’m kind of like, we need to hurry up and do a Season 2 because we’re not getting any younger. Can’t keep getting away with this. Alicia is this girl next door type. She starts off the show dating Harris but she also has this undeniable chemistry with Zac. What did you think about their long-awaited kiss on the racetrack? Oh my gosh, I mean, it’s so funny because Michael and I had become such good friends filming this so when that day came around we were kind of like, “What?” But no, it was very comfortable and great. We obviously care so much about these characters and I care so much about Alicia and following her heart and doing things that make her happy and not just constantly doing the right thing. Taking that chance was a big step for her and I was really excited for her on that day, yeah. I love her character because she’s obviously with Harris, this bad boy. But she’s not a mean girl. She’s nice to everyone. She’s there for everyone. And she’s the first one to clock and support Kiara’s crush on Caitlyn. Can you speak a bit about the role Alicia played in Kiara’s journey to finding herself? And would you like to see her and Caitlyn get together in future seasons? Oh, my God, absolutely! I mean, I feel like Kiara’s journey is her journey and Alicia is just being there and letting her know that she’s there for her if she wants to talk about things and not putting any sort of pressure on her to come to any sort of conclusion for anybody else’s benefit other than her own. So yeah, just being that support system for her was great. And yeah, I love Johnna and we’re really good friends in real life. We love any time we have scenes together where we get to explore that friendship, it means a lot to us. There are so many couples, both established and blossoming: Brooke and Curtis, Caitlyn and Curtis, Caitlyn and Kiara, Harris and Alicia, Alicia and Zac, maybe even Brooke and Marcel in the future. Who are you shipping the most and why? I mean, Kiara and Caitlyn. That’s my ship, I think. Alicia is also a bit of a horse girl. Do you have any experience with horses IRL? I do. I had a horse in high school, which was so crazy. When Johnny was like, “She’s gonna have this horse.” I was like, “You’re kidding, I had one.” And I just sent him a picture of me at the same age with my horse and I was just like, “Wow, how crazy is that?” But it was great. It was such a fun day to be around the horse. I haven’t been around a horse forever. I’m hoping if we do a Season 2 that I get to get on one of those things. You had a few scenes with Matt Lanter, who played Liam in the 90210 reboot. Did you watch him in that show? What was it like getting work with him? He’s an amazing guy, so lovely. Everybody was so amazing on this set and so giving and present. He was, yeah, divine. I hadn’t actually seen that show, I need to go [watch it]. The season ends on some wild cliffhangers. Harris flips his car after losing to Zac in a street race, Caitlyn finally receives a call, presumably from her dad, and Alicia realizes that Zac gave away the code to her dad’s showroom. What was your reaction to reading those final pages in the script? I mean, it’s kind of frustrating in a way because we’re like, “Um, can we read the next one? Like, I want to know what happens.” I can’t believe we have to wait so long to figure it out because we don’t know either. It’s so up in the air for us as well. But also, of course, excited. I love those scripts that you just – it’s bingeable, you know? And I love those shows. So it was, like, “Oh shit, this is good.” Those last three minutes, I was like, “There has to be more! This can’t be it!” I know! It’s so funny as well, like, with Harris, Josh’s character, everyone’s like, “Damn dude, are you not coming back?” He’s like, “Um, hello?” Where would you like to see your character end up in a potential Season 2? I think she’s on such a journey at the moment, Alicia, just kind of finding out what she wants and what makes her happy. Maybe it does have to come at the cost of somebody else’s feelings, maybe it doesn’t. Her relationship with Harris is so complicated, but also built on a huge foundation of loyalty and trust and everything like that. So it’s a hard spot that she’s in. But also now that Zac’s kind of betrayed her in this way, I don’t know what she’s gonna do. But I’m excited to see how she handles that situation. I’m also excited to step into her own independence and see that friendship with Kiara blossom. We see that even before Zac betrays her, she’s telling him she’s not ready to jump into another relationship, which is already so different from the typical high school girl trope we’re used to seeing. I love that about her as well. She’s like, “Just because this happened doesn’t mean I’m doing that.” She’s not this thing that can just be tossed around between these two guys who are being kind of, in her mind, I feel like immature. I don’t think she appreciates the racing and this kind of energy of this fight over her. I think she finds it kind of ridiculous. And I really like that about her. I love that she’s on her own journey and really strong in her [convictions]. She is independent, I think she always has been. This is something that she’s learning at the moment, but I also think it’s something that’s so integral to who she really is at her core. I can’t let you go without bringing up The Wilds, which unfortunately ended after two seasons. What do you think Shelby would be up to today? Oh my god, you’ll make me cry! I love Shelby, oh gosh. I mean, hopefully her and Toni are somewhere together, happy, on a beach somewhere. Hopefully not too traumatic, but I don’t think that, you know, that was traumatic for her. I think she’s probably, yeah, on the beach with Toni somewhere, living very happily. Maybe there will have to be a reboot! In like 30 years, we’ll do a like, where are they now? Do you have any other projects you can tease? Yeah, I’ve got a movie coming out I think at some point in this year called The Monster that was directed by Darren Bousman which I’m very excited about. It’s kind of like a horror, thriller, love story. It’s fun, I’m excited for it. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Motorheads is currently streaming on Prime Video.
