Legendary Indian captain and wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni will be in action for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. The 43-year-old cricketer was retained for Rs 4 crore by the Chennai-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. He is all set to play his first competitive match after more than 10 months on Sunday (March 23), when CSK will take on arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in the third match of IPL 2025.
In the first match of the new season for Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Dhoni will have a chance to create history. If the right-handed batter, who is the most capped player in IPL history, manages to score at least 19 runs, then he will break Suresh Raina’s record and become CSK’s leading run scorer in the IPL.
During his 12-year association with the Chennai-based franchise as a player in the IPL, Raina played 176 matches and scored 4687 runs. Dhoni, on the other hand, has 4669 runs to his name in 234 IPL matches for CSK. He is just 19 runs away from overtaking Raina.
Most runs for CSK in IPL
Suresh Raina – 4687
MS Dhoni – 4669
Faf du Plessis – 2721
Ruturaj Gaikwad – 2380
Ambati Rayudu – 1932
Ravindra Jadeja – 1897
Michael Hussey – 1768
Murali Vijay – 1708
Subramaniam Badrinath – 1441
Shane Watson – 1252
Dhoni, who led CSK to five IPL titles during his time as captain, scored 161 runs in 14 IPL matches played last year. He faced a total of 73 balls across 11 innings and hammered 14 sixes and 13 sixes.
In addition to breaking Raina’s record of runs for CSK, Dhoni will also have a chance to become the fifth leading run scorer in IPL history in the upcoming season. The five-time IPL-winning captain with CSK also played in the cash-rich league for Rising Pune Supergiants and has a total of 5243 runs to his name in 264 matches played so far. If he manages to score at least 286 runs in the 18th edition of the world’s richest franchise cricket league, then he will go past Raina’s tally of 5528 runs in 205 matches.
Like Dhoni, Raina, who has now donned the hat of an expert, also played for Gujarat Lions in the IPL along with CSK. Dhoni and Raina joined the two teams for a couple of seasons when CSK was banned due to match-fixing.
