Mum-of-three left to die in the road after 'cowardly' driver sank 10 pints

A man who hit a "beautiful" mother-of-three with his car and left her to die in the street has been jailed. Matthew Harris, 36, had drank 10 pints of what is thought to be lager before driving his Nissan Juke and colliding with Keita Mullen, 30, along with another pedestrian. The horrific incident happened in Bawtry, South Yorks in July 2022. Keita, a mother of three, was pronounced dead after suffering serious injuries while her friend was left suffering from mental trauma. After the incident, Harris fled, eluding the police initially. However, investigators found the detached wing mirror of the vehicle at the crime scene and traced the make and model of the car. They located the damaged vehicle at Harris' residence in Conisbrough, South Yorks. The damages were consistent with those from an accident, and a forensic examination uncovered Keita's DNA on the car's windscreen. Further investigations revealed Harris had drunk 10 pints before taking to the A1 and heading toward Doncaster, South Yorks. Harris was arrested and interviewed four days later, where he answered 'no comment' to every question, but he then pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. On Friday (March 21) Sheffield Crown Court handed down a 16-year sentence to Harris which was reduced to 10 years and eight months following his guilty plea. Harris, after being found guilty, has been slapped with a 12-year driving ban, effective upon release. Serious collisions sergeant John Taylor, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "No length of sentence handed to Harris can bring Kieta back.". "We know at the time of the collision Harris was driving without a licence and insurance and driving at speed having consumed 11 pints of alcohol." "Harris' actions led him to killing Kieta were selfish, and following the collision can only be described as that of a coward." "I am pleased he will now spend a significant amount of time behind bars, and I hope a strong message is sent to our communities; we all have a responsibility for each other. "You will be held responsible for your actions while behind the wheel of a vehicle. "We have a zero tolerance for those who pose a risk, and will put you before the courts." After the loss of Keita, her grief-stricken husband Tom Mullen wrote a heartbreaking tribute: "Literally my best friend for more than half my life, nothing will ever be the same without you!". He wrote on Facebook: "Literally my best friend for more than half my life, nothing will ever be the same without you! "Beautiful inside and out, so immensely talented and the best mummy in the world! "I promise you I'll take care of our babies, raise them exactly how you wanted and make sure they never forget just how special you are. "We all love and miss you so much Keits."
