THE Under-13 Craven Week rugby tournament is currently under way in East London, South Africa, from 29 June to 4 July. Mr Mauritz Thirion, manager of the Namibian team, said that distance and cost did play a role in this year’s event in getting the 23 players to East London.
The event was the idea of former Springbok flanker Piet Malan, who had a vision to get schools involved, so he proposed the idea at the South African Rugby Board’s 75th anniversary celebrations. Named in honour of the legendary Springbok player and administrator, Dr Danie Craven, the tournament has grown into a cornerstone of youth rugby.
This is the only opportunity where a Namibian team can still participate in a Craven Week, as the other events have all become Academy Weeks. This proves to be a useful yardstick to see how our Namibian youngsters measure up to their provincial counterparts at this young age.
Thirion said that it is every boy’s dream to play in a Craven Week team, and the tournament is a typical stepping stone that plays an important role in the development of senior rugby in Namibia.
Namibia is participating in the Under-13 B Division and are taking on Zimbabwe in game eight of the tournament today, 30 June.
