Neal Shipley Moves the Cut Line Down, Doesn't Ask for Much in Return
@Source: newsweek.com
Despite his very short professional career, Neal Shipley has had his fair share of unique situations.No one can forget the opportunity he had to play a round with the legendary Tiger Woods at the Masters Tournament, where he also happened to win the low amateur award.Another such moment came during the second round of the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort. Shipley happened to be directly responsible for setting the cut line at 2-over, which opened the door for no less than 12 other players to play over the weekend.On Friday, the Korn Ferry Tour rookie entered the 18th hole at 1-over for the tournament and was in the group of exactly 65 players who were making the cut at that number or better.However, Shipley bogeyed his 36th hole, leaving him at 2-over with 12 other players who received the pleasant surprise of a weekend tee time 'courtesy' of the charismatic 24-year-old.Shipley reacted in his own unique way when he learned of the opportunity he had unknowingly given to several of his peers. The Ohio State alumni did not hesitate to ask for "compensation" for such a singular bogey."Well, everyone knows where my locker room is, and they can feel free to leave some Waffle House gift cards in there for me, I'd appreciate it," Shipley said.His comment was very well received after it went viral on social media. Many fans responded with words of appreciation for his candor, and more than a few called on Waffle House to sponsor him.One of those who responded via X was Michael Kim, known for his strong social media presence. Kim was one of 12 lucky players who made the cut, thanks to Shipley."Neal just made 12 new friends," Kim posted after learning of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native's final score of the round."You got it buddy," Kim later promised after learning of Shipley's hilarious request.Neal Shipley is playing in the Valspar Championship thanks to a sponsor's exemption. His start was anything but happy, as he carded one birdie and six bogeys for a 5-over 76 in the first round.However, he rebounded admirably in the second round, improving by eight shots from the previous day. His Friday card included four birdies and only the now famous birdie on the 18th hole (3-under for the round).In the third round, Shipley again struggled on the front nine with two birdies and three bogeys. He almost turned it around with three birdies and no bogeys through 16, but his double bogey on 17 left him no better than even par for the round.His 54-hole score is 2-over and he is tied for 61st place.More Golf: Viktor Hovland Finds Form at Valspar Championship, Skies up Leaderboard
