Netflix axes four hit series in 'brutal' cull including The Recruit and The Sandman

Netflix has confirmed the cancellation of four shows ahead of the 2025–2026 television season, leaving many fans heartbroken at the loss of their favourite series . The latest round of cuts by the streaming giant includes beloved fan favourites and critically acclaimed dramas, with two of the four shows not receiving the chance to wrap up with final seasons. The most surprising cut is the fast-paced spy adventure series The Recruit, which debuted in 2022 and quickly garnered a loyal fan base. Noah Centineo starred as a fresh CIA lawyer who finds himself embroiled in the complex world of international espionage, earning praise for its satirical take on the US intelligence agency. Despite achieving a solid 80 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Recruit has been cut down in its prime after just two seasons. Noah Centineo expressed his feelings about the show's cancellation in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter: "It is what it is. Netflix, they have a certain mandate that they need to fill, and I'm very proud of the show, very grateful to our audience. "We have a pretty strong cult following. And with Netflix, it just didn't really fit what it was that they needed, I suppose. And so onto the next, I guess." Territory, an Australian neo-Western drama that explores the power struggles within a wealthy Outback family, is another show that has fallen victim to Netflix's recent cancellations, reports the Mirror . The six-part series tracked the Lawsons' battle to keep their billion-dollar cattle empire amid threats from rival ranchers, corporate miners, and Indigenous land claims. Netflix has cancelled the show after its initial season, leaving supporters hanging without closure. Another fantasy drama meeting its conclusion is The Sandman, with the forthcoming second season set to be its finale. Adapted from Neil Gaiman's comics from 1989 to 1996, the series charts Morpheus's journey as he evades captivity and endeavours to rebalance his ethereal kingdom. Despite a solid cast led by Tom Sturridge and a devoted fan following, the streaming giant has opted against extending the series past its sophomore outing. The decision has been attributed to Neil Gaiman, who faced recent allegations of sexual assault. A dismayed fan voiced their frustration on social media, expressing: "F--k you, Neil Gaiman. "You make one of the most enjoyable pieces of fiction I've ever experienced, let me fall in love with the universe, characters, events, everything about it, and then go and do some heinous shit. They continued:"All the while leaving breadcrumbs within your own stories that we all probably could have seen coming. I've felt every emotion reading, watching, and listening to Sandman. I loved it." Completing the list is The Empress, a German historical drama centred on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The show experienced a surge in popularity upon its release in 2022, becoming Netflix's second-most watched series globally for two weeks and ending as the seventh most popular non-English language series that year. Although The Empress has been renewed for a third and final season, Netflix has confirmed that the story will not continue beyond that.
