NFL Draft 2025: If Giants pass on Shedeur Sanders, might Jets pick him?
@Source: nj.com
It’s still possible the Giants will pass on a quarterback with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Cam Ward is widely expected to go first to the Titans. Shedeur Sanders could go second to the Browns. But if he doesn’t, the Giants might pass on him at No. 3, if they sign Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson. Travis Hunter could be a fascinating non-quarterback option for the Giants at No. 3. But in the latest mock draft from CBSSports.com’s Chris Trapasso, they go with an entirely different non-quarterback. And in this scenario, the Jets wind up taking Sanders at No. 7. First of all, Trapasso based his mock draft on Rodgers signing with the Giants and Wilson returning to Pittsburgh. So the draft unfolds like this: Ward to the Titans, edge rusher Abdul Carter to the Browns — and then Missouri offensive tackle Armand Membou to the Giants at No. 3. So the Giants pass on Hunter — a fascinating wide receiver/cornerback who goes fourth to New England — and opt for Jermaine Eluemunor’s replacement at right tackle. This would be a surprising pick. With the Jaguars at No. 5 and Raiders at No. 6 not being in the mix for a quarterback, that leaves Sanders for the Jets at No. 7. Here’s the rationale for the Giants' pick at No. 3: Whoever is eventually the starter for the Giants in 2025 will need to be better protected than past quarterbacks in the Brian Daboll era. Membou is a powerful blocker with elite testing numbers. And for the Jets' pick at No. 7: The Jets plan for the future at the quarterback spot and prepare for a Sanders/Justin Fields quarterback battle that’ll surely grab headlines in August. Yes, the Jets just signed Fields. But he probably isn’t their long-term quarterback answer. And they didn’t make a huge commitment to him. They gave him a two-year, $40 million contract that is really a one-year, $30 million deal. They can ditch him after 2025 if he stinks. So if there’s a chance they’re going to be in the market for a quarterback in next year’s draft, why not take one now, if they love Sanders' potential? (Though it’s entirely possible they don’t love it.) Still, Sanders with the Jets and Rodgers with the Giants (at least for 2025) would make for a fascinating season.
