Two-Time All-Star Considering Retirement After Turning Down Contract Offer: Report
@Source: newsweek.com
A two-time All-Star catcher is contemplating retirement after turning down a contract from a postseason contender, according to a new report.More news: Yasmani Grandal declined the Atlanta Braves' contract offer "about a month ago," according to Francys Romero. Grandal, who played 72 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, has likely seen his free agent stock rise in the meantime.The Braves lost starting catcher Sean Murphy to a cracked rib when he was hit by a pitch on Feb. 27. He is reportedly facing a 4- to 6-week timetable to return. The next injury to a projected to starting catcher could elicit enough of a bidding war to make Grandal's next offer too good to turn down.More news:A veteran of 13 major league seasons, Grandal has played 1,307 games for the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Sox and Pirates since his 2012 debut.Grandal has long been regarded as a strong pitch-framing catcher. No catcher has been credited with more framing runs since Statcast began tracking the metric than Grandal (103); Buster Posey is a distant second with 66.More news: Despite limited playing time with the Pirates last season, Grandal was credited with six framing runs, tied for eighth in MLB. Although he slashed .228/.304/.400 last season, major league catchers slashed only .234/.299/.380 as a whole in 2024.More to come on this story from Newsweek Sports.
