Bergenfield head football coach Rob Violante was tragically killed in a fatal car accident on Wednesday, Bergenfield Superintendent Dr. Christopher M. Tully said in a letter on Thursday morning.
Violante served as the program’s head football coach for 14 years and his team made the playoffs five times under his watch. He was also one of the program’s track coaches.
Violante was a 1998 high school graduate of football powerhouse Somers (NY) of Westchester County and played quarterback at both Iona College and the University of Delaware.
He was also the son of Frank ‘Skip’ Violante, who currently serves as Glen Rock’s athletic director and coached Dobbs Ferry (NY) to eight state championships in his high school football coaching days. Violante’s brother, Chris, currently serves as a coach at Somers.
“It is with profound sorrow that I write to inform you of the passing of our beloved high school faculty member, head football coach, and track coach, Mr. Robert Violante — known affectionately to many as ‘Coach V,’“ Tully said in the letter released to the school community. ”His unexpected loss is deeply felt across our entire school community, and we know that Bergenfield High School and our town will never be the same without him."
Tully added that grief counselors will be available at the high school for anyone who wishes to speak with someone.
Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio also released a statement regarding Violante’s passing.
“On behalf of the Borough of Bergenfield, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Violante family and to all who knew and loved Coach Rob,” Amatorio said. “He was more than a coach, he was a mentor, father figure, and a source of strength for our students and community. His impact as Head Football Coach and Dean of Students will never be forgotten. In coordination with Superintendent Chris Tully, we’re making sure our school community has the support needed to grieve, heal, and honor his legacy.”
The Bergenfield, N.J. high school football, and Somers sports communities are crushed by the loss of Violante.
“He was a great man, friend, mentor, and coach,” Bergenfield assistant coach Joe Lapi said. “He was everything. He will be missed deeply.”
