The Dallas Wings selected UConn star Paige Bueckers with the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft on Monday.
There was little suspense as Bueckers was widely expected to be the No. 1 selection just days after her Huskies won the national championship.
“Just an overwhelming sense of gratitude,” Bueckers said on the ESPN broadcast of the draft. “It’s super surreal.”
The 6-foot Bueckers became emotional while talking about what her UConn teammates have meant to her.
As for her new team, Bueckers said: “Dallas, I’m so excited,” and added, “let’s get it.”
The Seattle Storm selected Dominique Malonga, a 6-foot-6 teenager, with the No. 2 pick in the draft. Malonga, 19, won a silver medal for France at the Paris Olympics last summer, and last fall she became the first French woman to dunk in a game.
The Washington Mystics, who held three of the top six selections, took Notre Dame’s Sonia Citron with the third pick and then USC’s Kiki Iriafen at No. 4.
Golden State picks at No. 5, with Connecticut at Nos. 7 and 8. Los Angeles is at No. 9, followed by Chicago at 10 and 11, and then Dallas again at No. 12.
