'Not Even 1% Ashamed That I Can't Speak English': Mohammad Rizwan Hits Back At Critics

Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan said on Saturday that he was not ‘ashamed’ about his English-speaking skills. Speaking ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he declared rather emphatically that Pakistan wasn’t demanding English from him, and if it ever did he’ll ‘leave cricket and become a professor’.
Rizwan, like his predecessors, has been under extreme scrutiny for his language skills. More than those in the game, it’s a section of fans who waste no opportunity to troll him or his teammates for any pronunciation or language errors they made during press conferences or broadcast presentations.
“I don’t care,” Rizwan told media, speaking in Urdu. “I am proud of one thing and that is whatever I say, I say from my heart. I don’t know English. My only regret is that I did not get enough education, but I am not even one per cent ashamed that I can’t speak English despite being the captain of the Pakistan cricket team,” he added.
“The demand from me is cricket, not English. There is a regret that I did not complete my education, which is why I struggle in speaking English. I tell my juniors to complete their education so that they are able to speak good English,” Rizwan said. “At the moment, Pakistan is demanding cricket from me. Pakistan is not demanding English from me. When it does, I will leave cricket and become a professor—but I don’t have that much time,” the Pakistani wicketkeeper batter concluded.
Rizwan will captain Multan Sultans in the upcoming PSL season. He’s under pressure as a captain too after Pakistan’s shocking winless, group-stage exit in the home Champions Trophy.
Soon after the tournament, he was sacked from the team’s T20I leadership. He led the ODI side on the tour of New Zealand but suffered another series defeat against the Kiwis.
Multan Sultans Squad: Mohammad Rizwan (C), Usama Mir, Michael Bracewell, David Willey, Iftikhar Ahmed, Usman Khan, Chris Jordan, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Faisal Akram, Akif Javed, Gudakesh Motie, Josh Little, Tayyab Tahir, Shahid Aziz, Ubaid Shah, Muhammad Amir Barki, Ashton Turner and Yasir Khan
