Not Punjab Kings! Sunil Gavaskar Backs This Team To Break IPL Trophy Drought

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has said that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have batted well and fielded brilliantly as well, backing the franchise to finally break their trophy drought this season, even as two other franchises continue their trophy hunt for the past 17 seasons.
In a chat with India Today, Gavaskar backed Bengaluru to go all the way, crediting their all-around strength and consistent performances on the road.
Bengaluru sit second on the league table, having won seven of their 10 games till now. Six of their seven wins have come in away fixtures, highlighting their ability to adapt to delivery under pressure in 2025.

“Royal Challengers Bengaluru. They’ve batted well and fielded superbly too. Mumbai Indians are close, but they’ve only just started their surge. The question is whether they can maintain it, as they have three tough matches coming up against top teams,” Gavaskar said.
“How they (Mumbai) carry that momentum will be key. But yes, RCB are the title favourites,” Gavaskar added.
Bengaluru’s three losses have come at home, a trend that can be a factor heading into the final leg of the league phase.
In IPL 2025, RCB have played as a collective force, moving away from the historical trend of depending on a few star players, Virat Kohli especially.
Bengaluru have a provisional playoff berth in sight and the Chennai Super Kings need a morale-lifting victory over RCB. But beyond the franchise goals, the Indian Premier League game in Bengaluru on Saturday offers the chance to see icons Kohli and MS Dhoni battling against each other.
Before delving into that possibility, a glance of the situation will reveal that Bengaluru can swell their tally to 16 with a victory over Chennai, a position from where they cannot falter in the race to the Qualifiers with three games still remaining.
A win against Bengaluru will instil some belief into an already ousted Chennai unit that it can gain some late momentum and finish somewhere mid-table and avoid the ignominy of being the wooden-spoon holders.
And each of that objective is linked with the form of Kohli and Dhoni, the protagonists of one of the brightest bromance stories in Indian cricket.
