Watch: Farnworth scores his seventh try in seven games
Highlights from tonight’s early game
Slick Isaako finish extends Dolphins’ lead
That good start Shane Flanagan was looking for is in real danger now, with the Dolphins going in for their second try in three minutes.
This time they go right, Isaiya Katoa digging into the line again before sending the first of three passes as the ball finds Jamayne Isaako on the wing. He hasn’t got much room to work with but he makes the most of it, leaping for the corner post and planting the ball down just inside the field of play.
This time the sharpshooter lands the sideline conversion, and it’s a very bright start for the home side.

And there it is, the Dolphins sweeping the ball wide to the left for barnstorming centre Herbie Farnworth to carry Moses Suli and Clint Gutherson over the tryline.
Farnworth has now scored in each of his last seven games, a sensational run of tryscoring form.
Another red-hot pointscorer – the league’s leading goalkicker Jamayne Isaako – lines up the conversion, but his curling attempt hits the post and goes wide.

Katoa threatening early for Dolphins
Isaiya Katoa is probably the best young halfback in the league and he’s looking dangerous early on in this one, repeatedly taking the ball right up to the Dragons’ defensive line before finding runners on the outside. Once or twice he’s gone himself and almost slipped through.
Now after a strong set for the Dolphins, featuring several Katoa runs, the Dragons have coughed up possession via a Val Holmes error in a tackle. Big chance for the home side to get their first points here.
Dragons lead 2-0 after 10 minutes
And we’re off – and the Dragons are on the board
The Dolphins kick off, Blake Lawrie takes the first hit-up of the match, and the Dragons earn a penalty after the first tackle of the game with the hosts ruled offside. A little too quick off the mark there.
And a kick for touch and a couple of tackles later, the Dragons receive another penalty, Felise Kaufusi pinged (a little harshly perhaps) for a late shot on Kyle Flanagan.
It’s been easy stuff for St George Illawarra so far and they take the two points on offer, Val Holmes slotting the penalty goal.

Fast start crucial for Dragons, says Flanagan
Dragons coach Shane Flanagan’s last message to his team was a simple one – it’s all about the start.
“We just need to start well,” Flanagan told Channel Nine before kick-off.
“Games that we’ve started well, and been in it at the 20-minute mark, we’ve come over the top of sides.”
Kick-off just a couple of minutes away now.
Storm too good for Cowboys in Friday’s early game
The early Friday night game is just wrapping up, with the Melbourne Storm completing a 38-14 romp over North Queensland at AAMI Park.
Jahrome Hughes has been the star of the show, with two tries, three line breaks and two try assists, while Storm prop Stefano Utoikamanu hasn’t done his NSW Origin selection hopes any harm with eight tackle breaks.

Rating the Dragons’ and Dolphins’ seasons so far
By Adrian Proszenko and Robert Dillon
We’re at the halfway point of the season so the Herald has taken a look at how each club is positioned in the race for the top eight. Here are a couple of talking points for tonight’s teams.
A stat that tells the story: Three losses by one point. The Dragons have been denied by field goals in games against Souths, Parramatta and the Warriors. Those results could well come back to haunt them at season’s end.

The surprise packet: Jacob Liddle. When the Dragons signed former Test hooker Damien Cook, Liddle must have been wondering if he’d spend the whole season in NSW Cup. Instead, the 28-year-old has starred off the bench, featuring in all 11 games and scoring six tries.
The surprise packet: Kulikefu Finefeuiaki joined the Dolphins from North Queensland and has since established himself as a starting edge forward, playing the full 80 minutes in his past four games. He’s provided an ageing pack with some energy and spark.
What they need to do in the second half of the season: The loss of Tom Gilbert and Daniel Saifiti to injuries, on top of the uncertainty surrounding Tom Flegler, will test the Dolphins’ depth. They’ll need their forwards to break even each week so that Isaiya Katoa can create chances for strike weapons Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Herbie Farnworth.

Today’s big league news – Meninga to coach Perth Bears
By Christian Nicolussi
Mal Meninga will lean into his Kangaroos’ contact book when it comes to picking players for the new Perth franchise, while also vowing to promote the west’s Indigenous sporting talent ahead of the Bears’ 2027 NRL arrival.
Meninga was on Friday officially unveiled as the new franchise’ head coach until the end of 2028, while vacating his Australian job he has held the past eight seasons.
Even at 64, Meninga said he was physically and mentally ready to re-enter the fulltime coaching world in clubland for the first time since finishing at Canberra in 2001. While successful stints with the Queensland Origin team and Kangaroos followed, Meninga bristled at suggestions he was nothing more than a “figurehead” for the Bears.
“That annoys me a little bit because they [critics] don’t understand the rep scene, they don’t understand what goes on, and how it’s the same as clubland where you’re building relationships, understanding people, and getting the best out of people,” Meninga said.
“I understand the enormity of it all, and I believe I’m up for it.”
