The Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has disbursed N226.96 million in compensation to registered employees in its Enugu Region from January 2022 to December 2024 for work-related deaths, injuries, diseases, and disabilities.
NSITF Managing Director Mr Oluwaseun Faleye shared this figure during his address at the NSITF Special Day at the ongoing Enugu International Trade Fair. Represented by Enugu Branch Manager, Mrs Uzoamaka Oraebgu, he explained that the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) provides financial support to dependents of deceased employees, covering 90 per cent of their total remuneration in case of death.
“There is also compensation for injuries occurring outside the normal workplace but occurring in the course of work,” he said.
Faleye noted that the ECS facilitates rehabilitation or counselling to help injured employees return to work. “In view of the aforementioned ECS benefits, it is worthy to mention that NSITF recently paid the sum of N25 million as compensation for ECS purposes to a staff of the National Assembly,” he added. “It may also interest you to know that the fund has so far paid the sum of N226,975,582.97 as compensation to some registered employers.”
He clarified that the ECS is funded by employers’ contributions of one per cent of employees’ total emoluments to NSITF.
Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture President, Mr Odeiga Jideonwu, in his welcome address, praised NSITF’s role in Nigeria’s development.
“NSITF’s regulatory role had continued to keep employers on their toes in providing safe working environments which, he described, as key to improved productivity,” he said.
He commended NSITF for ensuring fair compensation for registered employees and urged more efforts in workplace safety through inspections, workshops, and awareness campaigns.
