Ernest John Obiena won his third straigh gold medal of the men's pole vault event Saturday evening at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. Obiena, 29, cleared 5.52 meters in his first try before going over 5.72m as he and Huang Bokai of China vied for the gold medal via a jump-off. Obiena cleared 5.77 in one attempt in their jump-off while Bokai failed to get over bar in the same height, giving the win to the Filipino pole vaulter. The Italy-based Obiena previously won the 2019 edition of the Asian Championships in Doha and the 2023 edition in Bangkok. Patsapong Amsamarng of Thailand took home the bronze medal after clearing 5.67m. Obiena's gold was the lone medal the Philippines won in this year's Asian Championships as other Filipino bets fell short in their respective events in the final day of the competition. Hurdler Robyn Brown was dethorned in the women's 400m hurdles after she finished in fifth place with a time of 56.98 seconds Sprinter Kristina Knott finished in sixth place in the women's 200m event after clocking in 23.82 seconds. Bernalyn Bejoy clocked in two minutes and 7.53 seconds in the women's 800m event to finish in seventh place.
