A team of young soccer players from the Central Okanagan will be travelling to Prince Edward Island later this year.
The Okanagan FC girls have qualified for the 2025 U15 Canada Soccer National Championships in Charlottetown, October 6-13.
They did it by going undefeated for a second year in a row at the Provincial A-cup in Kamloops, getting past powerhouse teams from the Lower Mainland, including Coquitlam Metro Ford and North Shore Soccer Club.
It’s the first Central Okanagan U15 girls soccer team to win the provincials in over 20 years. The last time was in 2003, when the Kelowna Stars were triumphant.
The team has had a successful season, playing up an age division in many games. A lot of the girls have birthdays closer to 2011 than the 2010 that is the average birth year for most competitors who will be at nationals.
"Age and size have never been a problem. They have always thrived on playing a beautiful attacking style of soccer,” said assistant coach Dave Manders.
Okanagan FC wants to better their performance from last year, when they came home with bronze from nationals in Toronto.
They will be fundraising over the next few months to raise $35,000 for their trip to Charlottetown.
The team has set up an online donation page and an Instagram account highlighting upcoming fundraising events.
