J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday raised the issue of a Kashmiri student’s thrashing with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and sought a First Information Report (FIR) into the incident. “I have spoken to the CM of Karnataka, Siddaramaiahji, about this unfortunate incident. He has assured me that the police have filed an FIR and necessary action will be taken. Four people accused of perpetrating this ragging/thrashing have been identified,” Mr. Abdullah said. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) reported an alleged case of thrashing of a second-year MBBS student at the Al-Ameen Medical College in Bijapur, Karnataka. The JKSA said the student, Hamim, was “brutally ragged and physically assaulted by senior students from the 2019 batch”. “The ordeal began on Tuesday around 4 p.m. when Hamim went to the college playground to watch a cricket match between the 2019 and 2022 batches,” the JKSA said. “A group of six to eight individuals stormed into his hostel room and brutally assaulted him. They repeatedly beat him, forced him to record a video apologising under duress,” the JKSA said. The JKSA said such incidents highlight the alarming culture of unchecked ragging and abuse within educational institutions. “This is not just an isolated case of violence – it is a failure of the system meant to protect students. Immediate legal action must be taken against the perpetrators, and both the college authorities and the law enforcement must intervene swiftly,” it said. Ruling National Conference (NC) in Srinagar condemned the incident. “The ragging incident at Al Ameen College in Karnataka where yet another Kashmiri student was brutally thrashed by some goons inside the college hostel is condemnable and unacceptable. We demand an immediate arrest of the perpetrators and a standing directive from the Karnataka government,” NC spokesman Imran Nabi Dar said.
