One win away from MASL title, Sockers hope to ‘give ’em hell’

The San Diego Sockers are one victory away from adding to their own record by capturing a 17th indoor soccer championship.
“It would be a dream come true,” said Sockers owner and head coach Phil Salvagio, who has led the team to six indoor titles across two leagues. “This is what it’s all about. A chance to hang another banner, this time in our fantastic new arena.”
To earn a third MASL Ron Newman Cup, the Sockers will have to beat a talented Chihuahua Savage squad that has been nearly impossible to beat inside Corner Sport Arena.
Kickoff is set for 5:05 p.m. from Chihuahua; the match will air live on the CBS Sports Golazo Network. Should the Savage win Sunday’s Game 2, the teams will play a “knockout game” immediately following. If that 15-minute mini-match is tied, the teams will play until somebody scores. The Savage have ended the Sockers’ last two seasons in knockout games.
The Sockers will look to replicate their performance from last Sunday’s Game 1 at Frontwave Arena, when they earned a 7-5 victory over the two-time defending champion Savage.
The Sockers never trailed, and finished with a 28-23 edge in shots. They got two goals apiece from Tavoy Morgan, Luiz Morales and Drew Ruggles; goalkeeper Boris Pardo made 11 saves on 16 shots in the team’s third home win over Chihuahua this season.
The win came with one negative. Veteran defender Luis Ortega suffered a serious leg injury. While losing Ortega’s defensive skills, playmaking and experience will hurt, excellent depth has been a strength for the Sockers all season.
The Savage feature MASL MVP Jorge Rios and the talented Hugo Puentes, who scored four goals in Game 1. The Mexican club went 12-0 at home this season while averaging just under 12 goals per game. The domination included a pair of wins over the Sockers by scores of 8-5 and 12-2.
The Savage have won 32 straight home matches against American teams. The Sockers are 0-3 all-time at Chihuahua in the playoffs.
A key factor in that domination is the ultra-compact dimensions of Corner Sport Arena, which — at 160 feet by 85 feet — is the smallest field in MASL.
By comparison, the Sockers’ home digs at Frontwave Arena come in at 200 feet by 85 feet.
Corner Sport Arena also has a rock-hard turf surface which leads to incredibly fast and very high bounces of the ball.
Former Sockers star Brian Farber said visiting Chihuahua presents the “toughest road challenge” in the MASL due to the field dimensions/conditions and because “it feels like their fans are right on top of you.”
Indeed, in several Savage home matches this season, visiting teams were competitive for stretches only to see the Savage turn a goal or two into an avalanche fueled by their passionate fans.
Still, Sockers veteran star Kraig Chiles expressed no fear about heading to Mexico for a chance to capture his seventh indoor title across two leagues.
“We’re gonna go down there and give ‘em hell,” said Chiles, who has goals in consecutive playoff matches. “It’s a championship game and we know it’s not going to be easy. Chihuahua’s a great team, but I love our team as well. Let’s go get it.”
